+5 Multipliers: is it important to get them?

Hello fellow Morrowind addicts!

I've only started playing Morrowind last week and I've just been getting familiar with the game and adding which mods I want but now I'm ready to begin a proper character and really get into the game properly. I'm loving the world but finding some of the mechanics a pain.

I've only played Skyrim out of the series which didn't have the attributes at all so I have no idea if it's important to try and max out your multipliers on level up. A lot of hints and guides I've read extol the virtues of 'efficient levelling' which is easy to understand but is it necessary because I'm finding heading to a trainer just before I level and keeping track of skills isn't much fun at all. Will I be at a disadvantage 20-25 levels later if I'm only getting +1 or +2 stat increases because I can't see how you would get +5 naturally.

For example I've read heavy armour is a good skill to take to raise your endurance but I never seem to get more than 1 or 2 heavy armour skill gains a level so far. I have been training medium armour but it's getting to the stage where the skill I train is higher than the skill I use which is stupid. This is probably a common question but I did google it and all I found was guides on how to max out your multipliers, standing for an hour letting rats hit you while casting the occasional heal isn't my idea of fun.

I simply want to use what ever skills I fancy and explore the world with out worrying about whether or not I get +5 endurance next level, do I need to worry about it or will accepting the +1 or +2 I get naturally see me through the game.

Apologies in advance if you are tired answering this question.

Ignore Medium Armor in this game.

As for the Stats. Once you have some levels under your character's belt, you will be fine even if you don't get +5 on each level up. There is no need to power or meta level in this game.

But, if you want to build a character that gets the most at each level up, then make sure you have a Major skill from each Attribute that you will use on a regular basis. But not something you will use all the time like Acrobatics or Athletics, otherwise you will level up before you have built up your attributes. Note, all skills count towards Attribute Multipliers, it's just Major and Minors that count towards leveling your character. So, you can train or use Minor or Misc skills before each level up.

However, the main game can be beat with just about any level 20 to 25 character (I have done uber characters and weak gimped characters). The expansions require higher levels, but you will be there by the time you get to them.

There are two very distinct ways of playing.

One way is to simply play the game and do what the character would do under the circumstances. Play it reasonably safe until you feel ready to tackle tougher regions or challenges at your own pace, and you will eventually become the toughest critter on Vvardenfell. Much of the game is static, so as you level up, you'll steadily begin to outlevel about half of the content.

The other way is to pay or train Misc. skills to get +5 multipliers at every level-up, and become the toughest critter on Vvardenfell. This is the fastest way to get to the "end game" content, but you won't see more than a tiny fraction of the rest of the game in the mean time.

The only differences between the two are the amount of thought and effort put into tracking Multipliers, and how soon you become overpowered. Personally, I feel that "power leveling" defeats the whole purpose of playing a RPG, and just shortens the amount of time until I have to start over with a new character. Since I've been playing this game on and off for the better part of a decade and STILL haven't seen anywhere near all of the content, I don't see a need to rush through it. Other players just want to "beat" the game and move on. Your choice.

There are also leveling mods (if you're playing on PC) which handle all of that in the background. The most popular is Galsiah's Character Development (GCD), which I consider ideal for traditional "single class" builds (Fighter/Mage/Thief). Another option that I use frquently is MADD Leveler, which is better for hybrid characters, but not quite as "elegant" in terms of programming. There are several others as well, but I haven't tried them.

Thank you for the replies!

It's more or less as I thought because almost every RPG I've played people tell you to design optimal builds but then it makes the game too easy, especially if you know the mechanics. For my first play through I'll probably just go with the vanilla levelling system and let things progress how they progress.
