Mundane Items

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:33 am

Hi there!

So I have always wondered if there is a use for all the mundane items in vanilla oblivion? Seems like a good way to introduce crafting of some type. I'm sure there are mods that do this, but I'm thinking purely vanilla.

Any real use for this stuff?

Not really, no. Just there for decoration and atmosphere purposes.

Yep, useless, except for throwing off Dive Rock, but whoever decided that every cup and paint palette could be interacted with, I take my hat off to them.

Just clutter.

No Rock-it-Launcher to shoot misc items like in Fallout 3

Yes. I use a mod that adds a writable "journal"; I require that the character must have a quill and inkwell in inventory in order to write in the journal. Some of my characters have made use of crystal balls for communicating with that mysterious "player" who guides them through the world. Items found in odd places sometimes inspire the imagination.

Much of the stuff that has a sales "value," like clothing, is so cheap that it's not worth picking up unless one wants to wear the item. Even stuff like armor and weapons is little more than clutter, if its carrying-weight to merchant-value ratio isn't favorable enough.

You may think that worthless clutter is just that, worthless. But to me they play a big part in the Oblivion experience. What would the world be without evidence that the people actually live in Cyrodiil instead of just being there for you?

I know they don′t actually use the pitchers, cutlery and brooms. But without that it would feel like in the games of old; empty. Making you just wanna rush through to get the job done whatever it may be. Thank Talos for Oblivion, where my Dunmer will live long and prosper.

Ehm, with some guidance from me

Oh, I like the idea of using in game items (crystal ball) to explain what meta gaming I do. I love to RP but with my life schedule it can be very hard not using fast travel and wiki checks. I guess I just need to think a bit more about how to explain these things away ;p

I guess on topic, are there any mods that make use of this stuff for crafting?

On the fast travel issue, with a number of my characters, I've added the "fact" that ayleid wells and wayshrines are "magicka hot spots" which give one the ability to teleport to another chosen location. One of the mods I use adds those locations (and also the rune stones) to my map, so one way of "fast traveling" is to hop between such locations. I can accept fast travel if it's limited that way.

Yeah, my characters have to have an inkwell, quill, and parchment for me to use the map at all. And only my all-powerful wizard character can use a crystal ball to see where he is on his map (in the wilderness) but my rule is he has to be able to wait an hour to get his vision.

I sometimes carry various little other mundanes. My more decorative characters place several "folded cloths" down for floormats! Bowls and baskets usually get filled with all those gems, jewels, keys, etc.
