Mundus and the start of the Elder Scrolls Universe

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 12:52 pm

Hi all

I've recently started reading into the lore of the elder scrolls and I understand most of it, but the start of the "dawn era" confuses me, I can't get my head round it, is their anyone who can explain them to me in simpler terms? about mundus and how nirn floats in Oblivion? and also who is lorkhan? sorry if these questions sound noobish :D

thanks in advance!

I had those same questions one time but I never voiced them. I just went page to page in the library. That was before I joined the forums though.

Oblivion is space. The planes are just planets. Sun and stars are just holes in the sky.

It began with a dream that broke into two. The Anuiel flea sought to assert the Aka-truth of reality, while on the other side of the scale the Padomaic wolf disasserted the lie, thus breaking the Dreamer and causing the madness and fears of non-identity.

There was nobody else for someone to use as an Other to identify its Self, so it made one. Those two made more, and on until Nirn. Now there are so many of them that I have doubts they would notice or care if the original dreamer ever woke up.

So I understand that Nirn floats in Oblivion but does it float in a specific plain?

Nirn is part of the mortal plane, known as Mundus.

So is Mundus the universe? Or is it a plain of Oblivion? Or neither?

It being a plain of Oblivion is a interesting theory Mankar had, however, The Mundus is the world of Nirn, surrounding it are the plains of Oblivion.

So Nirn, the aedric planets and it's moons are in mundus, so is mundus the realm of Oblivion? Basically what is the difference between Mundus and the Oblivion realm that they float in?

Mundus is the material-mortal dimension
oblivion-darkspace-void doesn't count as material

coterminous? They exist on top of each other. Maybe.

I'm waiting on Bethesda to reconstruct a kooky non-geocentric universe. Perhaps as part of some heretic babble. Lord knows they managed to make an earth-hubbed cosmos out of nowhere.

Mundus is like the solar system. It has Earth, Luna, Jupiter, Mars, Venus etc. The other planets being the Aedric realms.

I think what makes it so special is that it's the only solar system. The other Daedric realms are all free floating in space.

The position of the other planets in the solar system protects Nirn from Oblivion. They just block Oblivion out.

Would it blow your mind if I told you even the Aedric planets are infinitely big and its only mortal perception that apparently limits their size.

All of the divine planets are smaller infinities floating in a larger infinity, but from a mortal perspective they appear to be finite spheres.

They're not actually planets, they're more like bubbles. Or kinda like some of the things in Halo. You cant walk the surface. The realm is on the inside of the bubble, and each realm is infinite. The bubbles are their own little universes inside the big main universe.
