I'm a Murderer!

Post » Mon Mar 22, 2010 5:51 am

Ha. So, I'm new to the game and series, just a disclaimer. I was playing around with the persuasion tools. I tried them on the same guy two or three times. By the end, he hated me so much that he attacked me! I ended up chasing him outside, where I . . . ya know . . . killed him. Now his body is just hanging out by one of the entrances to the city.

Anyway, I hope I didn't like destroy the universe by killing this character, or lose the opportunity for a cool quest. Can that happen?

hi and welcome, don't worry quest related characters are unkillable, you may however find that every guard in every city you go to magically knows that you killed somebody and will hunt you down.

Welcome to the quirky world of oblivion.

Nope. You MIGHT loose out on some quests but if the NPC you kill is essential for a major quest line he/she/it won't die EVER

Edit: Ninjad!

Edit #2: Also if he/she/it hit you first and it hurt then you're in the green and free to kill her/him/it/whatever

Yeah, you'd think that, but no one's approached me yet. Weird.

You absolutely could have lost an opportunity for a quest. Some NPCs are quest-related. Some of them are what are called "essential" (which means they never die) but some are non-essential, which means even though there's an associated quest with them, they still can die and the quest will never start.

What you can do is go to www.uesp.net and do a search using that NPC's name, see what comes up.

Aah, thanks. I need to play again and go check out the dude's body (he's holding an eternally burning torch, by the way - ha!), find his name, then look him up. Thanks.

In some cases you'll also get a 'An NPC essential to this quest has died' journal pop up that closes a quest, when you kill someone quest related.

Also if he attacked you first and you kill him it doesn't count as murder. It's like taunting in Morrowind. :D

The funny part is, making him mad enough to attack you counts as improving your speechcraft skill. You could end up with a bonus to your personality

Huh... I didn't think you could do that in Oblivion. I thought they left taunting in Morrowind. I'll have to try that.

It was self defence, He hit you, so you stabbed him 150 times.

Yup, in Oblivion, instead of taunting we have "reverse persuasion," where instead of using the minigame to raise someone's disposition, you lower it instead.

The one time I did this in the game, the NPC whose disposition I was lowering actually went completely berserk and started attacking the publican of the inn he was staying in instead of me, starting a huge brawl. :chaos:

You can tell who's essential, and who's not by hovering the cursor over them. If the icon is a crown, they're essential. If it's a circle, they aren't.

I know, sounds like a piece of random info. but it might help in the future. :P

Someone mind telling me how 'reverse persuasion' works? There's nothing about it on the wiki. Im trying to get an NPC to attack me, as done with the OP. I tried lowering a characters disposition down to 0. It doesn't get any lower than that.

Does the NPC's aggression factor into it?

Ya I think so. Not sure why you want someone to attack you haha. You can always try Frenzy although I think you get charged with assault for that not sure though.

With frenzy sometimes it is assault and sometimes it isn't, or at least that's how it's been in my experience. I'd quite like to know how you get someone to attack you via persuasion also, I thought they got rid of that after Morrowind.

Frenzy is probably the best way in most cases, but it will probably still get you an assault for casting it on them. Most NPC's won't just randomly attack you no matter how pissed they are haha. You can always just kill them with no witnesses and you shouldn't have to pay a fine or go to jail although it will probably show up as a murder in your journal.

That's the point. I want none of that. No Assault Charge, no Murder Count. Nothing. I guess I have to aim at characters whose aggression stats are higher.

Ya I can't really think of anyone who fits the profile unless they are part of a quest or something. If you wanna get creative you could try the Skull of Corruption but its still assault. Best way to kill someone without any responsibility is either cursed clothing or poison apples. No charges on either of those but they require you to be very sneaky.

LOL! Awesome!

Well, per what other have already said, you're good.

However, once you build your character up to the point of near untouchability, visit the Imperial City, and continue to kill guards until civilians start coming at you. Then, slowly march from city to city, unleashing your unbridled fury on those unfortunate to find themselves in your wake........

LOL, its sort of like, IDK, being Anakin Skywalker at the Jedi Temple. Eventually, you just hate everyone. And, its a great way to pick up arrows. ;)
