Music and Lyrics

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:16 am

Hi all,
I am working on some music inspired by the new Skyrim theme toon. There is a clip of the one I currently working on on soundcloud at http://snd.sc/hMVdz9
Is there anyone who can write lyrics in Elvish as I would like to do a choral arrangement of this tune with Elvish lyrics (I have given in to my inner geek).
Cheers,
Harry

Tolkien elvish or what? I think there are several different types of elvish in popular culture but I think Tolkiens is the only complete one. So you may need to specify. Unless you want something that only sounds elvish but doesn't actually mean anything.

Well since we are talking about Skyrim, on the Skyrim forums, which is part of the Elder Scrolls, i'ma go on a limb here and say... Elder Scrolls Elves.

I doubt that TES Elvish (of any kind) has a complete grammatical structure, or enough known words to make up a song.

I don't think they do either. I don't know if the OP realizes this or not.

As for the actual song as of yet, I like it. It does give of that Elvishy feel to it.

Just an Elvish sound is fine, and I guess Tolkien's would be suitable - it probably sounds the same and even I'm not enough of a geek to tell the difference (if you look at Welsh written down, which most Elvish is in the game, it looks like it should sound completely different to how it actually sounds!)

To the poster who wondered how it was recorded (in the other thread I accidentally created), it is all written in Propellerhead Record 1.5 with Reason 5.1 (which most commercial electronic house/pop/r'n'b etc is written on). At the moment the tune is just a sketch that I've been playing with for an afternoon.

I would go with Tolkien's Elvish (of which there are two different dialects...). I used some Sindarin Elvish in my TES fan fic, because I've spoken via email with some TES 'language experts', and they said the creators of TES never actual went through the trouble of making a full Elvish language. What little they do have in the games is partially inspired by Tolkien's Elvish languages, but it's not a full or real language. I say, why make up a new Elvish language when Tolkien already made it for all of us? It would be like making up your own version of French instead of using an already existing dialect. Silly, in my opinion. So, definitely go with Tolkien (of which there is Quenya and Sindarin). Hope this helps. :)

It sound soothing enough for elvish, I should say... Here are som Tolkien-elvish words to sample:

aelin="lake"
alda="tree"
amon="hill"
anga="iron"

and some with 'b':

barad="tower"
beleg="mighty"

and 'c':

caran="red"
celeb="silver"

'd':

del="horror"
draug="wolf"

...

I could go on because I'm having a copy of The Silmarilion in front of me right now. But I'm off for bed, so I'll recommend that you google it instead. My guess is that there's a lot of Tolkien-elvish dictionaries to find pretty easily.

Make more music :goodjob:

Cool. Was hoping someone could write something that sounded good on the ear. I svck at writing lyrics in any language - they always sound like something from 8th grade poetry-writing exercises, no matter what tongue I use LOL

How about running the dovahkiin lyrics to it? They are about the same length.

Keep up the good work! :thumbsup:

Good on yer mate. I'm off to bed on account of an early start in the morning, but look forward to getting it. Hopefully I'll have time to have a mess around tomorrow evening :)

Hi Richard, I tried the lyrics in the song but it sounds too gutteral, rather than the soft ethereal elvish sound I was looking for. Thanks for your effort though.
