Music in Skyrim

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:52 am

The problem with Oblivion's (and especially Morrowind) music was that you only had a handful of general purpose songs that just feel repetitive and boring after a while because you're listening to them so much. I hope Skyrim gets more variety like different explore music for different regions, and different types of songs for crypts/caves/ruins etc instead of general dungeon music.

I would turn off the music after a while, if there was more prominent ambient background sounds to help set the mood. Both Morrowind and Oblivion were lacking this.

I would prefer well done, immersive, mood-setting ambient sound effects over epic exploration music.

Music is an important part of every video game, I know Skyrim's music will not fail to deliver some great music!

Not repetitive at all, by the very word's definition. Every piece of music was crafted, more so in Morrowind than Oblivion, I do not see why you'd think repetitive. Also, I don't think the music loops but rather fades away. (some composers really make repetition their staple, and use looping music until combat is over.)

As a second point, exploration and combat music should be unobtrusive above anything else. The main theme should be memorable, and it is. If you create overly-intricate, structurally complex music or, in fewer words, drive away the attention of the player then you have not succeeded. A film composer who does that equally fails. Ultimately it may be about taste or preference, for which there is no argument that makes sense.

I just about 95 percent of the time just listen to the music in the games. Unless I'm playing Starcraft, WoW, or some fighting game. Then I'll just play whatever I feel like.

Something like http://webucko.myftp.org:8000/lars/daggerfall/music/recreations/coldgreysand/GSNOW__B.ogg would probably be a better fit.

Dangit never link that universally-adored snowing tune! I'm going to have to loop it for at least a good 20 minutes, now.

The individual songs are not repetitive, but hearing the same small selection over and over again during long play session really wears them off. It doesn't really matter how good they are when you're overexposed to it. I have the same issue with Blizzard's super epic suites used for login/character select music throughout the World of Warcraft expansions and I quickly get sick of them no matter how amazing they may be. It's like eating hambugers every day for weeks.

Hah, there's my comment sitting right at the top. Another Daggerfall favorite of mine is this one. Reminds me of walking out onto the busy streets in a medieval city in the early morning, just as the sun is beginning to rise.

I generally respect people's opinions, but Dubstep? In Skyrim? That's like listening to the Tele Tubbies theme song in a FPS.

Amon Amarth. THAT'S Skyrim music.

I absolutely adore the music in TES games. So no i'd never mute it or put on other music while playing the game, as its a big part of the TES experience.

I think more of that would be good too. I think the main thing they need to address with the music is the amount of tracks. They were all great but got old after awhile because you heard them over and over.

Hmm. I've always been confused by the frequent connection of gamers & metal music. (Especially as someone who's played alot of Warhammer and WH40k)

I just don't see it.

But hey - that's why they're called "opinions". :D

Hey, I just think metal fits the theme of Skyrim more than rap/techno/county, etc. :D

I mean, when I'm killing a dragon, I don't want to hear "Yo yo, I be making money like a playah, all these hatahs be hatin, yo yo."

I think the main reason he linked to amon amarth is that they are a Scandinavian death metal band with many viking lyrics.

Amon Amarth, Death, Opeth, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity <--- This is what I listen to while playing L4D2. Particularly Death.

Also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3WJX1cIuY4 explains why someone would link Skyrim and Amon Amarth.

I love you.

Rock on, brother.
(I'd add an insane amount of emotes, but I'm using Ipod while listening to Amon Amarth.)

Heaviest thing I listen to is Within Temptation. Most of the rest of my collection is female singers, in the Rock / Pop / Singer-songwriter categories. (Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, Garbage, Cranberries, all the Lilith Fair performers..... not really "Yeah! Let's kick some butt!" music.)

I'm looking forward to the Skyrim soundtrack. Based on the trailer, it'll be similar to the Oblivion stuff - i.e, awesome. :mohawk:

I generally respect people's opinions, but that reminds me of the early "One Formula To Rule Them All" days of FPS design.

I'll admit that I'm not a huge Soule fan by any means, but I think his music suits the games fine. I just wish there was more of it. After so many hours of playing Morrowind or Oblivion I just felt like I was hearing the same tepid tunes over and over again. His music doesn't really jump out and grab me, but as long as it's not so bad that I focus on it as such, that's fine; it's just a soundtrack anyway, I wouldn't sit around listening to it under normal "listening" circumstances.

lol @ using Dubstep as an example. What a red herring.

Frankly it's rare that a game's music will really enrich the experience more than using another band I like. What's funny is that if I start listening to a new band while I play a new game I associate that band with that game. Example: I started listening to Coldplay when Shadowbane came out and now whenever I hear Clocks I think about my time grinding gold for my city, patrolling hunting areas executing enemy groups and tearing down massive amounts of cities in the name of being the dominant guild on the server.
