Music in Skyrim

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:57 pm

Honestly, I never listen to music in any games.
Everytime I get a new game, I instantly go to the sound options and turn off the music. Music in games generally just do nothing but irritate me.
Idk why that is but I suppose I just haven't found my gaming music. But this would be a change, don't you think?

Edit; I forgot to ask, what is your musical preference when you play games? What would you like to see in this game?

You're missing out by turning off the music. Music sets a tone, creates an environment, and the Elder Scrolls music gives a huge sense of exploration. Dubstep does not belong in any game. It's obnoxious and stage stealing instead of complimenting.

Lol well that is a matter of opinion sir. I find Dubstep to be utterly amazing. And that is also my opinion.
I just could never get into any game music. I tried it for Oblivion, and it about blew me off my rocker.

I loved the music in Oblivion. It has one of the best soundtracks of any game that ive ever played, and Ive played A LOT of them. I loved walking around the wilderness in Oblivion, doing my usual fort and cave exploring, and hearing the music that really set the tone for the situation.

I'm not a big fan of Dub Step so I can't say I would want this in a game. To me, music is a huge part of any adventure, whether it be video game or movie. To me, turning off the music in an Elder Scrolls game would be similar to hitting the mute button when music started playing in the Lord of the Rings movies. It's unthinkable.

In previous Elder Scrolls games they have completely nailed the soundtrack, setting a perfect ambient mood to my explorings. As for Skyrim, so far every time I've watched the gameplay trailer (upwards of 12 times) I have gotten goosebumps from the music after the dragon shout. It's just that damn good. I can't wait to hear the music in Skyrim.

P.S. does anyone know a way to get TES soundtracks onto an MP3 player?

Well I listen to the music in the game, duh...

But with Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Morrowind I can add my own music, and I tend to add music from other games, like Baldur's Gate, or in Fallout 3's case, Half Life.

Skyrim needs Celtic and Pagan-influenced music!

None of that nondescript "battle horn" stuff. Jeremy Soule composes some amazing melodies, but in order to feel genuinely unique and not like a Conan/Beowulf ripoff, there have to be harmonic elements to the soundtrack - lutes, strings, perhaps some low atmospheric choirs. Given that there's going to be bards and tavern performers in Skyrim, I think it's safe to see that we'll be seeing some of this - but I hope that the music in dungeons and out in the wilderness feels equally vivid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVH91f3GLmM#t=1m10s is a particularly strong example, composed by Adrian von Ziegler. He's an independent artist who composes Gothic, Celtic, and some other very fantastical pieces of music. One thing I like about this sort of music is that each one embodies a specific mood.

An example of this would be in Morrowind's music, much of which always had a strong, resolute, almost "angry" feel to it - like the Dunmer themselves. Other tracks were melodious and mysterious. Oblivion conveyed these sorts of things as well: with a very expansive and uplifting air about much of its music. However, I think that these moods could always be made more pronounced and manifest themselves more strongly through the music. It'd certainly make each piece more memorable, as opposed to times in MW/OB where you couldn't tell the start of one song from the end of another and it just felt like some endless haze of instruments.

Daggerfall also excelled in this thematic approach to music. Probably because it was all written in MIDI format, but whatever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au06RRGbXqg#t=0m42s is a remastered rendition of one of its tracks, which I think could fit quite well with Skyrim's wilderness as well.

I love the Skyrim music I have heard so far, I'm sure the exploring tracks will be awesome as well as the battle music. There has never been an Elder Scrolls with bad game music. The music has a great influence while playing the game, I couldn't play a game without the appropriate music that comes with it.

The music in Oblivion and Fallout 3 was awesome enough that I pulled the music files out an burned them onto CDs to listen to while not playing the games. :)

I tend to either listen to the given music in games, or turn it off and listen to no music. (Depends on the specific soundtrack, if it gets repetitive, if it seems out of place, etc.)

Only game I've ever listened to other music during is World of Warcraft - and that's only because I needed something more varied to listen to during endless repetitive questing & grinding. And I still liked the game music enough to listen to it sometimes (and again, pull some of the better tracks to listen to recreationally.....)

I like dubstep but it has no place in Skyrim. I'm sure Jeremy Soule is going to do an amazing job of the soundtrack, still to this day Oblivion has some of my favourite vg songs

Is this a joke? Dubstep in skyrim? No thanks.

Interesting observation: that second track sounds like it has the main motive from the Jenova song in ff7.

I enjoy music, atleast good music. It sets a tone, and helps you get immersed.
I'm sure since you play with dubstep playing, you rarely get Immersed in a game.

It's like playing a horror game with the lights on and friends with you. It's just messin with your immersion, thus changing your view of the game when you finish it.

I definitely have a good feeling about the music in Skyrim so far. Absolutely love the new viking choir-esque Morrowind theme. Sounds fantastic. Hopefully we get more classics from the series redone with more of an epic scale in mind. Regardless though, I'm sure Soule is going to deliver 100%.

Oblivion's combat music was amazing and if Skyrim's combat music or even regular music is better.

Meh, dubstep is pathetic for me. Oblivion's soundtrack blows it away. Anyway that's my opinion.(*flameshield on*)

I liked how New Vegas brought back music from older Fallout titles in certain locations (Nipton had one, for example). If it was done in rare circumstances, I would support music from older TES games. We know there is a dumner-influenced settlement somewhere, throw in some old Morrowind songs like "Over the Next Hill" or "Caprice".

Lol if anything, I just like to ADD music to TES, not replace it. What I did with Morrowind for PC, is that I kept every track in there except the combat music (just couldn't get into it, OB's was a huge step up for me in terms of combat music). Then, I kept looking for music that would fit a specific setting, and added them in certain categories (I have around 50 battle songs, and maybe 20 explore ones)

But I DEFINITELY love that orchestral, ambient feel. Hell, anything ambient really. it just sets the mood. too much beats and it feels kinda cheap

Something like http://webucko.myftp.org:8000/lars/daggerfall/music/recreations/coldgreysand/GSNOW__B.ogg would probably be a better fit.

I already like the previous scores in the elder scrolls games. But not counting that music I'd like a mix of halo, avenged sevenfold, and STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO!!!!!!!

I don't think the musical aspect will disappoint, it hasn't so far and J. Soule is particularly skilled when dealing with fantasy.

I replaced music in some games too, such as swapping bulk-standard tavern-music for Bartok's string quartets (on rotation): interesting effect, personal preference really. Wouldn't do that in TES though...
