[REQ] Music type expander

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:43 pm

As the title says, I'm wondering if it's possible for an OBSE plugin that could remove the restriction Oblivion has for music files needing to have the .mp3 extension. Since Oblivion uses DirectShow to play the music, any format that someone has filters for should be able to play fine. This would be useful for people that have music in Ogg Vorbis or FLAC format, and don't want to re-encode it or give it an improper extension.

It would also be nice if such a plugin could prevent files that have video from displaying it (which causes Oblivion to be backgrounded/minimized), and just play the audio track. But that's a lesser concern.

OBSE has not yet introduced any sort of commands that are associated to music ( not sounds ). Alas.. they even didn't included a Streammusic command that accepts variables yet.

I was hoping it could be a little more basic than that. Somewhere in the engine, it has to do a search for files when a new track is to be played, which is filtered to those that end with ".mp3". A plugin that could remove that filtering the engine does is all I'm looking for. I don't need a plugin that adds scripting commands or anything, just one that slightly alters the way the engine picks a music file (if it could alter the way the music file is played, so only audio tracks are rendered, that would be nice too; but again, a lesser concern).

It'd be more complicated that merely modifying the search string - I hazard a guess that it would involve messing around with the sound manager's DirectShow filtergraph interface.
