Name of Guilds

Well Fighters Guild actually have unique name
Though it was then called The Syffim, after the Tsaesci word for 'soldiers,' the organization that was to be known as the Fighters Guild had been born.

Black-wood-company is an actual name for a guild, which basically is a fighters guild.

IMO, the College of Whispers is a pretty awesome name. For that, I give one of my characters to them as tribut - regardless on what political/moral views they have!

I also agree with the Thieves Guild being a bit too obvious a name. Comona Tong? Now that sounds a bit more intimidating. :toughninja:
(Although I could see people in town who don't now much about this guild saying things like: "What is [Insert New Thieves Guild Name]? You mean that guild of thieves?"

I also liked The Black Water Company mainly for their name (is that the correct name or did I accidentally think of the real mercenary group its based on?)

Basically, I want the Guilds to actually sound like a real organization (which usually means a more 'creative' name)

The Comona Tong is a guild of assassins, not thieves(They're the guild that The Dark Brotherhood became an off-shoot of)

I agree, they need to be more creative concerning guild names.
And guilds plays an important part of the elder scrolls - so they need to be representive also in Skyrim.

Since there will be action such as smithing, I wonder if they will have guilds associated with that? Similar to a masonic guild or something.

I think the same as most of the above posters. The established Guild names were darn boring. And only being able to advance in the Fighters Guild and not the Blackwood Company? Lame.

How about for Evil characters? What if I would rather join the Order of the Black Wurm instead of the Mages Guild?

I am loving the potential of having much more than one option of Mages guild I could join !!! Synod? Whisperers? Maybe a third one just for good measure? lol

Honestly, I'm personally hoping I get the choice between joining the Dark Brotherhood and the Morag Tong !!!! Having both (if not more) assassin's guilds in the game would be hellified sweetness!

*sigh*

I am having such a hard time waiting for this game...

what about city / house factions I loved them in Morrowind - I was disappointed there were not such factions in Oblivion - and also not the Imperial Legion Faction ....

Agreed. The guild names are overly generic and seem kind of gamey. If they want to be retained as nicknames that the uninformed commoners refer to them as, fine, but their official names should be a little more interesting.

The Comona Tong is a guild of assassins, not thieves(They're the guild that The Dark Brotherhood became an off-shoot of)

No, the Morag Tong is the assassins' guild. The Cammona Tong was a criminal organization in Morrowind.

Yeeaahhh, I'm not seeing a whole lot of reason for the Morag Tong to still be existing. The one country it was legal in was obliterated, Dark Ef culture is on the decline, and the Dark Brotherhood has a near monopoly on the murder business in the rest of Tamriel. If the Tong still exists, it would be a mere shadow of its former self, barely resembling how it looked and worked in Morrowind.

The Mages Guild split into the Synod and the College of Whispers after the events of Oblivion; this was established in the Elder Scrolls novel The Infernal City.

I must say. Fighter/Mage/Theives Guild must have tooken awhile and some kind of revolutionary creative mind to come up with those.

That was more than a century before this game, and there's no reason to expect that either of those organizations are empire wide or that they extend into Skyrim. In theory, the guild in each city would be strong enough to be independent of the other mage guilds and need no national standard.

Am I the only one who thinks that Fighter's Guild, Mage's Guild and Thieve's Guild are amazing names and who are gutted to hear they will not be in?

LMAO what is amazing about The Fighter's Guild or The Thieves Guild?

That's the most boring and literal thing that you could name them. Let's change the names of every fastfood restaurant to The Place That Sells Fast Food.

What is the name of your local firefighter's union? What is the name of your local musician's union? I'm sure they have creative names.

I'm with the Musicians' Union, and the Performing Rights Society. Very different names, both do what it says on the tin.

And would you agree that those aren't the most creative names? I think that's what they are going for in TES. It's just working people having an association, there's no need to be fancy about it. They can name their individual stores, and those names usually are creative.

Not saying they are particularly creative, just pointing out that the word 'Guild' doesn't have to be used for everything, without coming up with bizarre terms. It's the Bard's College, not Guild. Thank god it was the Dark Brotherhood, the Assassins' Guild would have been a step too far.

The Mages Guild was founded by Vanus Galerion in 2E 230 (667 years before the official establishment of Tiber Septim's empire) and somehow it survived at least 1100 years (2E 230-3E 433). So, I don't think that both Synod and the College of Whispers died out after less than 200 years. At least one is likely to appear in Skyrim.

EDIT: I'm guessing that Synod is more religious, as a synod is a church council. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/synod And I'm guessing the College of Whispers is more clandestine/secretive.

The Mages Guild was not a continent wide organization for most of the time it existed, it took a lot of time to grow and expand. Now, being a continent wide organization at the end of the third era that has lasted for 1100 years, how does something like that collapse? Each town's guild is fairly independent already, and there's no reason to change over to a new business model just because some other town did. I'm not sure why anyone would be motivated to join the college of whispers. If the Synod is religious, it is likely split between each of the divines just like the temple is.
