Names list

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 6:08 pm

Is there any word on what the names list will be? I would like to be able to create my character without having to restart multiple times because I want a voiced name and it turns out the name I like aren't there. I am guessing that there may be different spellings of names I'd use which I'd prefer to some default title name.

As far as we know now, we won't find out what's on the list until someone makes the list after release.

At the E3 Todd said "around 1000 of the most popular names"

Of course we don't know if there are typical english names or worldwide

We do know there's a few gag names in there that we can't say in these forums.

Last I heard some Beth fellow vaguely said wait until the 10th and find out ya self.

Not that it matters much, I have a feeling the npcs in the game that a dresses you by name can be counted on one hand.

Yeah, the only thing that will use your name is Codsworth.

I don't understand that. Why not just release it?

I wondered the same thing, and the way it was explained to me was that it would do more harm than good.

So, 1000 people would be happy, but the other 99000 people wouldn't be.

Also, it would promote people using a name they normally wouldn't use. They would rather it be a nice treat for some than looked at like a hindrance.

I wouldn't be surprised if the generic voice NPCs (the Fallout 4 equivalent of Skyrim town guards, for example) also used your name. The more different characters a given voice actor voices, the more likely it would have been worthwhile to have him record the name list. Or, at least it would seem to be the case.

Why would city guards bother to learn your characters name? You're just another random smuck to them.

The easiest way to get an idea would simply be to google the top baby name lists. Most likely everyone who worked on F4 also has their first name as a usable name.

That's true in the first hour of the game, but after that you've probably saved the town. Besides, if they have to know who you are to know you are wanted ... assuming there is some sort of criminal justice system in the game.

"You! You are the guy with the beard! It's time to pay for your crimes, criminal scum!"

Neither really prompting them to learn ya name, I think they more inclined to give ya a nickname.

I don't see how. Knowing they are there simply means having to restart the game multiple times simply to get a name used that you would be happy about. For instance if someone's name was Robert and they are often called Robby spelt with a y but would prefer to be called Robbie or Rob in game then not?... why should they have to go through every single permutation in order of preference in order to get the name they want?

I do wish they'd release them, though in my case I won't be playing the game until after I've finished my completionist FO3/FNV runs so I'll just get them from some website or whatever. Maybe I just don't get why people would be upset. If I like a name on that list enough to use it, I will. If not, no big deal. Seems like a trivial thing to get ticked off about.

I will say, I would be cool if our companions (other than the robot) used it as well, at least on occasion. Or at least our spouse, if they appear in the game after the intro at all.

Well, IRL I'm David so I think I'm probably covered. But then you never know I guess...

I'll be interested when the list is released, I mean, how do you arrive at that final list? Trends in names change over time, I wonder if they've chosen from a particular point in time - from 15 years ago? From 34 years ago ()? Is it also possible that they would choose from the most popular names from the 50's? Probably not, but RPing a character with a contemporary name for the period would be kind of cool, like Ronald, or Eugene. No offence to the Ronald's or Eugene's out there!

But your names are weird though.

EDIT: In reality thought I guess it would be a name for each person who works on site at the Studio at least + a few to fill the gaps from universally common names throughout the last few decades.

Yeah my middle name is Daniel so I'll use that since I'm fairly certain that would fall into the top 1,000.

Except...no where has that been confirmed??? I've seen a number of people say this, but no one from Beth has said "only Codsworth will use your name." And that seems like something they would have wanted to mention when bringing up the names.

yeahhhhh i dont think will do harm at all, if u normally name ur PC Charles, maybe u will her him if not, u will just address as Mr. or something similar.

Isnt a big deal if u compare to what they call u on the other game, normally they allow u to choose a name but when u read dialogues the name never pop there since all the dialogues where speak anyway.

I want the list for the same reason but I figure I can save the game after all the time spent in the mirror on character creation and before choosing my name at the salesman. Then if it's not said by Codsworth I can reload from there.

"Todd Howard noted, at E3, that Codsworth will remember your character’s name and that there’s a database of names that he’ll be able to say outloud. At QuakeCon, a video revealed some of these “popular names”, including Mr. Boobies and Mr. [censored]face."

Todd specifically mentions Codsworth having 1000 popular names voiced. Why would he single out Codsworth if it wasn't JUST him? Don't know what more you need to "confirm" this. But you'll find out soon anyway

Maybe because he was talking about a specific section of gameplay (pre-war) with an specific instance of a npc using your name (Codsworth calling attention to Shawn). Since no other gameplay with NPCs who would be familiar with the PC name have been showcased, there is no way to confirm or deny it will be used other places.

Well while it hasnt been confirmed or denied i guess its possibile few other NPCs will be able to call you by name but dont expect much of that simply because it wud require far to much work with voice recordnings. At best i wud say it is mybe possibile that beside Codsworth your NPC folowers and mybe few other important NPCs from the faction/factions you join might know your name and call you by it but even that is far from granted,

And for anything more than that its simply not happening.

Pete's been adamant on Twitter that they aren't releasing it - I guess they want people to discover it for themselves. 1,000 names give or take is a lot of names.

^This right here.

Besides, we're getting companions that we build relationships with and survive together. It's gonna be really awkward when Codsworth is saying my name (giggity) and none of the other companions will address me. [For me] it would be a wasted mechanic to only have one NPC use it.
