Naming

I normally name my characters after someone cool from a book or movie. The last two I made were Magnus and Angron. I just do it for fun! :)

I just randomly pick names. But this thread just made me realize that I have no clue what my character's name is. I've got 35 hours in and have no clue what the heck her name is. I know I named her but what? I guess I'll have a look and find out. :P So yeah, random.

I like to name based on random references in Sci-Fi or music. If I had an evil character named something that didn't really fit it, I just pretend it's an alternate reality.

I use location names for my characters. I go on Google Maps, look around DC and the surrounding areas, find a street name that sounds cool and use it as my character's name. In New Vegas, I look at a town in California and do the same thing. In Morrowind/Oblivion, I use a TES name generator.

I typically name my character after some pre-war thing. As you can tell, some characters in the fallout series get their names from multiple pre-war items, guns, people etc.

Abraham Washington for example.

I named my Character "Joe" because my name is "Joe". I'm so ORIGINAL RIGHT??

Second I named "Kaitlyn"(close friend of mine).

I don't have a naming criteria I just name the person like normal and be done with it.

Someone else named their character "All Talon Company Scum" I forget who though. The contract looks hilarious when you do it though.

My character in nearly every game I play is "Xaeyr". No matter if it's an MMORPG or whatever. Same name. No particular meaning to it. Just liked the arrangement of the letters and thought it looked cool. Have been using it for, geez, 12 years or so, lol.

For a long time now my characters in both Oblivion and Fallout 3 have been named Andronicus (which is coincidentally also part of my user name) after this man (english spelling of the name):

Just curious as to what goes into people's naming of characters. A lot of people I know give their characters a name like you would expect in an MMO. I personally give my characters a real first and last name based on no particular thing. For instance, my newest character is named Peter Valkenburg after a Stadtholder I had playing as the Dutch in Empire: Total War who had 6 stars and served 2 consecutive terms which if you play that game you would know how awesome that is.

My names are usually a hodgepodge of real people or characters I like.

Last FO3 playthrough was Trinity Fox.

FONV Legion: Tesla Goth
FONV NCR: Reilly Loveland

Um, I like feminine/cute names. Some of my characters have been called - Lycoris, Altea, Kitty, Paige, Sophie.
I DO realize they're not names that'd strike fear into the hearts of my enemies or anything, but I figure as long as I can shoot 'em while they're busy making fun of me... :'P *shrug*

I've never made a male FO character, but if I ever do, I'd want a more gender-neutral name for him over a masculine one :)

Jaime/Jamie is gende neutral

Alot goes into my character naming. The first character i ever named was Yeshua Hashashin and was made to be Middle Eastern looking. That has NOTHING to do with the names meaning as I was then a very staunch and bitter athiest and was in no way making a racial jab at Muslims. He was a bad ass character though. The newest one I just made is Ezekiel House, an African American fellow who dresses like a bluesman. The combination of the major prophet Ezekiel and the king of blues Son House. I like for the names to have alot to do with the character(karma, skills, storyline, interactions, etc.)

My FO3 character shares the same name as the central character and title of a well known Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby.

Depends, normally I give them first names only, special exceptions for RP characters.

Karmel is my generic evil girl, like really evil, not just murder people but try to break them first, terrify them, cripple them, leave them to rot and so on. She's not very nice.

Phoenix is a roleplay character who believes he is a god. He happens to be incredibly tough and strong and runs around with a super sledge (or nearest approximation to a cross I can find) and beats things he considers impure up. So ghouls, super mutants, animals, most people (since y'know, they're dirty and all)... (He's also a little nuts, bless 'im)

But yeah, most just get a name, normally the character is planned out vaguely ahead so it may link to their future karma/life choice but mostly it's just a nice name.

I don't really know what's in a name... or, more importantly, what's in the names I choose for my characters. Here's a list, so far... maybe you'll see something I don't.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Josef Muldrane- Black Talon Merc

Andrew "Law Dog" McLafferty- Regulator Elite

Dr. Christina Bell- Physicist / Nuclear Technician

Professor Adam Langsley- 'Ethics of the Old World' Professor at the New Roosevelt University in Washington D.C.

Michael Finn- Wasteland Scavenger / Amateur Engineer

Louisa Testantranopolis- prosttute

Denver Cole- Psychopath

Broderick Vandecasteele- Riley's Rangers

Dr. Matthew Bentley- Biologist

Dr. Andrea Falkner- Chemist

Patrick Kirkpatrick- Contract Killer

Michelle St. Jane- 1st Lieutenant, Sigma Squad

Randy "The Rat Bastard" Levine- Comedian / Thief

Dr. Paulo Rodriguez- Physician (Daddy's Boy)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many, many more... but I figure I should cut myself off there. Already I've put more up than I meant to... >.<

I only have one real character, Alan James Sutler, surname comes from the V for Vendetta which I thought sounded good, my own name is Adam so I just thought of something with an A and the first thing I thought was Alan and James is my middle name so I just added it. I created him before F3, hell more for Drama class, but Sutler has been used most in Fallout and the character itself was practically created in Fallout games and RP's. He's a fanatically loyal, sadist, Enclave colonel who has constant flashbacks to all the battles in his life at the Oil Rig (where he served in Granite's Squad so...), Navarro, walking across America alone to get back to Raven Rock, Raven Rock itself against Eden and then the Brotherhood, Adams Airforce. Saw a lot of people killed, mostly everyone he knew, his parents and later his wife and son in Navarro. Travelling back to California to get revenge on the NCR and later the Chosen One himself in New Arroyo.

Its kind of awesome that you even know who Son House was, let alone named your FO3 character after him ^_^

I name my characters after singers, like Karen O, Alison Mosshart, or Gracie Slick.
