Naming

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 3:25 am

Just curious as to what goes into people's naming of characters. A lot of people I know give their characters a name like you would expect in an MMO. I personally give my characters a real first and last name based on no particular thing. For instance, my newest character is named Peter Valkenburg after a Stadtholder I had playing as the Dutch in Empire: Total War who had 6 stars and served 2 consecutive terms which if you play that game you would know how awesome that is.

I usually name my characters regular first and last names, but they have to be ethnically correct and have some meaning behind it.

I know its more realistic to name people a name disregarding their Karma level, but I don't like it that way. I also make it a small reference to something else.

Like, my first character's last name was Jenkins. A reference to the old, Leroy Jenkins.

My names have no relation to the character's karma or even their personality, for that matter. They have regular names such as Jack, Chris, etc.

I feel that the immersion is lost when I'm playing a character called 'Ghost', or 'Slayer', or whatever.

I named my latest Corrupt Save, because the only place you actually see your characters name is when you try to load a gamesave.

Incorrect.

If you are a target for Talon Company Mercs in a random encounter, they will be carrying a note named "Kill [insert character name here]!"

I give my characters names I like the sound of: Eden, Anja, Katrina, Cherokee, Poloma, Fiona, Marley, Alina, Boone. There have been a few with weird names but I haven't made one of those in a long time.

I love Eden. Not really sure why. It sounds like a pretty name, but not a sissy one, either. Good work.

Um, I like feminine/cute names. Some of my characters have been called - Lycoris, Altea, Kitty, Paige, Sophie.
I DO realize they're not names that'd strike fear into the hearts of my enemies or anything, but I figure as long as I can shoot 'em while they're busy making fun of me... :'P *shrug*

I've never made a male FO character, but if I ever do, I'd want a more gender-neutral name for him over a masculine one :)

Yeah! :') Haha, my girl chara in NV is actually called that, though I spelled it a little differently. ^_^
Lol, I can't really think of any other ones. I tried googling them for fun, but came up with recommendations of names like 'Helmy, Belson, and Othello'. They're unique, that's for sure, but ummm...

I always have trouble coming up with character names, either to games or for fiction. I often reuse the same name from one game to another, like Valfreya, Mera, and others. What I often end up doing is using names I like from anime: My first Oblivion character was Clare, and my second was Teresa of the Faint Smile. Then later I had Saya. Lately I have been using names from mythology: Lilith, Medea, Persephone, Hera, Macha, Artemis, etc...

Skylar? :P

Just google "baby names" then go to the Unisix section. You'll find loads of good ones. Before naming a character in Fallout, or Sims, I google baby names. Im sure google must think Im having kids every two weeks.

Nope. 'Skylur'! :'P
(...Right... Just kidding - you're correct, and I'm unfunny.)

*giggle* Lol, that sounds like a better idea than asking on Yahoo!answers. The replies are always, "Hey, cool! Congrats on the baby! NAME HIM MARTHA, OK?"
Like, say what? Do I at least get to go on a reality show with my non-existent kid too? :P

But haha, yeah... Thanks! I'll try finding some names that way, when I start another playthrough. ^^

:lmao:

How refreshing. A poster with a sense of humor. :P

Advice: Do not ask anyone here for the name of your child. Last thread like that, I kid you not, the name everyone settled on was;
xX 0d1n M3gatr0n T35t05t3R0N3 Mc4m3r1c4 Th3 Th1rD Xx

I came up with most of it though. :whistling:

It was in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1138937-so/ thread.

Whoaaa, but that's like the coolest name EVER. :'D
Still, it's too bad I already have a name for that non-existent kid of mine. I just figured I'd name them after Pokemon.
I thought that since fitting in society is such a big deal or whatever and all, a simple and unassuming name was the best way to go. 'Jigglypuff' will thank me for it later.

I named my first Fallout 3 character dike Richardson and he was an absolute dike to everybody. This was also before I knew that "dike Richardson" was a Fallout 2 character. I believe my next character was "[censored] McGee" and he was a [censored].

He wasn't just a character. He was the President of the United States. :P

That video would make my life so much easier, though!
"Maddie was named after her aunt, and Ashley-Maria was named that just 'cause his mom thought it was cute, so why was I named Jigglypuff?"

I'd be like, SIT TIGHT, I HAVE THIS GREAT VIDEO FOR YOU TO WATCH.
Yeah, I shouldn't have the right to name anyone.

Zach, is my name and the name of my first character. In CoD4 my friend Christian was a great sniper, and I made a sniper on FO3 so I named it after him. I also couldn't think of another name for my third character so I named him Green. My newest character is named Big Chocolate after one of my favorite Musicians.
