Naming the dog

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 3:02 am

We obviously dont know this particular dog's potiential backstory or why exactly his name is dogmeat from the E3 trailer, but a small part of me thinks that we can name the dog we find. All we know so far is that he's a random dog at a gas station who has no given name when we find him...so there seems a bit of an opportunity to give him a name.

I'd name him after one of my dogs I have in RL.

Yeah, I named soldiers in Xcom. It's a bad idea. ;)

The problem games have with naming things is always the voice-overs. Which is why games get creative with titles and indirectly calling on the players avatar. Bethesda tries to address this in Fallout 3 with pre-recording a couple hundred *popular* names. Still going to leave out a lot of people who prefer unconventional names or foreign names or plain made-up ones.

Same applies to the dog or even places for that matter. If a developer allows the player this freedom he limits spoken dialogue referring to animal/place/players avatar. That's the gist of it.

I'm going to name him either blood, or dog.

While I agree, in this instance I dont think the PC will ever refer to the dogs name anyways. Todd Howard would always refer to the dog simply as 'the dog" so there is room for a bit of creativity.

If I recall correctly I only heard the VA refer to Dogmeat as "Pal" or "Boy" so I'd say it's very possible that you can rename it.

I want to name it Cat, that'll really confuse the raiders...

Probably name mine DOG. Except pronounce it as it is spelled. Makes it sound more interesting.

As with all dog companions in games, I shall refer to him as Sir Spoot.

I think Todd confirmed on Twitter that this dog was FO4's Dogmeat. It was when he announced that 'Dogmeat Cannot Die'.

I don't know why everyone refers to him/her as Dogmeat. The E3 Conference shows the dog labeled as "Dog", not "Dogmeat".

They confirmed a while ago that the Dog is later called Dogmeat when you complete s certain quest and find out about his heritage.

But if we could name him it would be Woollie. That Dog is Sh*tlord.

In the combat montage video, we do see him labelled as "Dogmeat", when the cursor briefly hovers over him while fighting a Protectron.

Sad but appropriate seeing as he'll probably be programmed as a higher priority target than the PC.

I figured it had to be named since we have a voiced PC and I doubt they would have recorded the top 1,000 dog names just for the dog.

There is a clip in the gameplay footage where you see the dogs name displayed as Dogmeat.

I'm not too fussed if we can't change his name. Since F3 any pet in any game is called Dogmeat for me.

Okay, but this isn't the Bioware forum. j/k :D

It would be cool if we could name the dog.

The dog is labelled as Dogmeat in the mircosoft presentation, you can notice it when dogmeat is fighting the protectron.

Damn, I never paid attention beyond finding him/her. Well there goes my hope on a dog not* being found across the U.S.
