I probably won't be naming any weapons unless they display a unique "personality" (for lack of a better term).
Weapon names are derived from a belief in ages past that some weapons, in one way or another, became imbued with a soul or a spirit.
In Western military cultures a feminine personality is quite often ascribed to personal weapons and are given appropriate names.
Some weapons are said to have a masculine personality and of course will also be given appropriate names.
Other weapons will have a masculine or feminine characteristics attributed to them but not enough to have a "personality" and will go unnamed.
These weapons will normally be referred to by name or he/she/him/her.
There is another class of weapons that are considered "soulless". It is said that these weapons just want to kill and maim and don't really care who they kill and maim. Weapons like caltrops are considered soulless. All unattended weapons are considered soulless but the classification isn't limited to only unattended weapons. These weapons are never named and are always referred to as "it".
Most weapons produced today are made on an assembly line and while they are designed to be identical there is usually some variation in characteristics from one weapon to the next. Every so often one comes off the line that is an outlier. This weapon is a candidate for naming (along with the few weapons that are not created on an assembly line with standard parts). Here is where my problem lies with naming a Fallout 4 weapon. Even though the weapons, nor their parts are not created on an assembly line, they are all identical. Not identical within tolerances, but IDENTICAL, exact duplicates across all game installs. The only way to have a weapon with a unique "personality" would be to create a mod with a new weapon and NEVER SHARE THAT MOD WITH ANYONE.
Having said that, if I do name a weapon, I think I will name him, Bill or George. Anything but Sue!
