Nanovision does already have a drawback, it's horrible to shoot while using the vision mode; thus making you the most perceptive pacifist in the game.
How was it horrible to shoot when it made the player stand out from the environment so efficiently? Did you mean that it's hard to activate nanovision and shoot at the same time?
No I mean it makes their outline slightly bigger than they are, which can cause you to miss, as well as your RDS not working in that vision mode. I imagine ironsights would work, but it's still not a great mode for accuracy. Plus, as the range wasn't unlimited in the PS3 demo, somebody who you can't see could well be shooting at you from all the noise you're making.
In the PS3 demo it was also **** for spotting cloaked players. However, when you consider that using cloak tracker (levelled) ups the visibility of cloaked players substantially, you don't really need nanovision to help with that.
The only problem I could see with it was if it had unlimited range, other than that, phasing out the effect with distance would be far preferable to simply cutting it off at a point where enemies are close enough to see and fight, but not close enough to show up on nanovision :s
