In other words; NASA requests funding.

Discuss.

yeah.......after all the hype with the "mars meteorite" a few years back that turned out to be nothing, im not going to hold my breath. between them falsifying temperature data and then proclaiming their new mission is to reach out to muslims around the world they have gone down the toilet. i trust them about as much as i trust a crack addict.

Oh yay... microscopic life forms that no body would pay any attention to if it weren't for the invention of Micro-Scopes. How... exciting...

You know, maybe if NASA contributed more time to doing stuff like.. I don't know... figuring out how to grow trees on The Moon? I imagine it would be a simple matter of A. Getting Soil to grow it in, B. Getting Water and enough sunlight (wonder where that is on the moon), and C. Getting Oxygen for the first few trees... and something about a atmosphere or somethin.. isn't that what domes are for.

But instead... we are looking at microscopic life forms on rocks that could of come from anywhere and be god knows how many thousands of years old. Bleh....

Yeah, bacteria and other microscopic life is tiny, it has no impact on anything at all right, I mean who ever heard of a virus having an effect on something as large as a human? And some kind of proof of other life outside earth, meh, who cares?

Also, growing trees on the moon, just like, what? I'm really struggling with the fact that there was no obvious sarcasm in your post.

But anyway, I remain skeptical on this discovery, the last fossils turned out to be contaminants iirc.

Potentially the most exciting story in history.

Its so we can chop them down and burn them to power our fleet of interstellar spaceships, thus allowing us to exterminate all xenos. Except for anything microscopic -- too much work and they can be ignored safely (Wells will back me up on that).

Well, that's interesting, but I always kind of took it for granted that there's probably micro-organisms somewhere else in the universe. Even if they decide that these finds are inclusive evidence, that just supports what I've already assumed is the case. Now if they find evidence of more complex life outside of Earth, then I'll be pretty impressed.

That's pretty much how I feel. Extra-terrestrial micro-organisms were pretty much a given. Once you have reproduction + heritability, it would be pretty tough for something "more complex" to not evolve eventually though.

Personally I think this is a very exciting discovery:

As summed up by Dr. Rhawn Joseph, in the lead commentary: "The overall pattern of evidence, from genetics to microfossils, indicates that life on Earth came from other planets. Our ancient ancestors were visitors from the stars."

I'm now imagining little comets flying around the galaxy, occasionally hitting planets and thus spawning biospheres...

Anyway, this study rocks. We may at last have proof that our (extremely) distant ancestors were visited by aliens, and perhaps even formed relationships with them!

This does not support that at all, in any way. And here's a hint: nothing will, since it didn't happen.

Awww, you don't let the primordial goop in my head have any fun :(.

EDIT: For anyone who didn't pick up on it, I was talking about the micro-organisms that are somewhere in our family tree. And some silliness was mixed in.

Also, I'm recovering from several nights of bugger all sleep, so sense I might not make or coherent.

I'm curious if they have dated this meteor. Even if we completely accept that SOMEWHERE, even nearby in the galaxy, there are micro-organisms, their fossils showing up in a meteor that hit earth would be pretty unlikely. Most of the meteors in our solar system formed around the same time, and to get something that used to be a part of a planet to break off and fly out into space without it completely melting and reforming seems fairly unlikely.

I don't think a peer review by 5000 scientists could miss that :P.

Very interesting. Potentially a revolution in science and philosophy if it happens to be true. Imagine how religions will face that...

Hopefully it will verified as life outside of earth to make it official that we are not alone though at this stage will we would be stuck with microbes. I wonder how certain organizations will take how there is life outside of our planet.

Well they didn't mind there was bacteria on the moon. It just happens that we brought it there. It's plausible that this meteorite might be a relatively recent relic seperated from Earth.

Yeah, that's how it's going to be, no matter the proof, evidence or situation. The skeptics can always deny it.
