NCR Veteran Ranger costume

Haha, valke, if you were me, you'd be insane with small details, and woulden't settle for something that doesnt look like the mask.
i swear costuming is my OCD coping method.

So after my dremel tool exploded in my hands, and burnt it'self out (as well as my hand) i decided to give up on the steel helmet route.
at this time of frustration, a friend suggested i use the fiberglass helmet liners they used.
i've got to say, they work very very well for the design, much closer to the head, and i can much easier add a camera box.
though i'm not sure how to add a dent to them, i'm honestly considering cutting a hole and filling it with bondo to leave it the impression of a dent.

speaking of bondo, i needed to fill a few areas.

now i just need a few tubes and cables, add abit of damage, add the camera on one side, and the ear 'pod' on the other side.
then i'll just fiberglass the inside, lenses, tinting.. holy crap i have alot to do

Are you going to put LED's in the mask for the Eye effect or nay?

Sounds like a fair deal.

Also is that a WWII German Helmet?

I came across your thread here Kommissar, and was impressed with what you've done thus far. I signed up to offer assistance. Im a military buff, and collect various equipment (mainly US Marine Corps stuff) but in my searches I often come across similar equipment from other branches and nations. I believe I can help you find a better match to the NCR Vet Ranger helmet. Infact, I know the exact helmet that would not only suffice, but outlast the liner your currently using, as well as stay closer to the article in game.

If you look at the Vet helmet, you'll notice the soft lip on the brim on the helmet that is gently angled as apposed to the very prominent curve the M1 has. Also, as you can see in any screen shot, the helmet has a very streamlined, smooth curve that transitions between the brim and the sides of the helmet, which then extends lower, almost covering the ears (for added ballistic protection of the skull) as is common with modern Kevlar helmets (such as the US's mainstays; the PASGT, MICH, and LWH (all of which the Combat Helmet in FO3/NV is modeled after). Now, the thing is, the US helmet's features I just mentioned are far more accentuated then some foreign country's similar helmet designs, such as Finland and Germany's current issue helmets.

This is where I believe the developers drew inspiration for the Vet helmet, there is one particular piece of equipment that is current issue of the German Bundeswher, it's the Mo 826. And lucky for you I recently sourced a location that sells them relatively cheap (for a Kevlar Helmet, which normally run between 200 and 900 depending on nation/type/condition). I'll send you a private message in regards to the helmet. It emulates the style of the American helmets (like the Vet helmet does) while maintaining a sleeker, more subtle profile. Let me know what you think, it might be just what you need.

Sounds like a fair deal.

Also is that a WWII German Helmet?

It's the liner from the inside of a WWII/Korea era M1 helmet, standard US issue.

Some time ago, i asked for some help with some PC screenshots of new vegas for good reference on the coat, helmet and armor of the NCR veteran rangers.
i got alot of help, and i'm very grateful.
so heres some of my progress.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/fallout-new-vegas.jpg

i've started with the armored riot vest first.

i drew a paper plan by hand, eye'ballin' it and then copied a symetrical version of it to card stock till i was satisfied,
after that i cut the shapes in foam.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/P9180595.jpg

and rounded the edges
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9220602.jpg

started to form them into good shapes with some heat.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9220601.jpg

and then glued them down, as well as using some elastic strapping to make a "rig" for the vest to be wearable.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230603.jpg
the black duster is a place holder till i make the proper coat, but it's to give an impression of how the coat will hang on the armor.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230604.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230605.jpg

a little dorky right now, but i think it's ready for some battle damage, weathering and some stencil paints.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230607.jpg

the next step is to get the mask looking proper.
this is a test to see what i can do with papercraft, or as it's known in some parts pepakura.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9250616.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9250617.jpg

the next step is to make it out of plastic, and make sure it's reinforced enough to be light, tough, and perhaps.. airsoft safe.

edit: hmm no image linking, okay, i'll switch them to just links.

Damn, nice man

Is it just me or should the trench coat not stick to your butt all the time . . Shouldn't trench coats blow in the wind or when moving?

Not hating, heck I even wear the trooper trench coat when not with my legion buddies (I'm undecided who to side with) but I think they could fix the clipping bigs and the sticky butt with any long coats and such, just saying.

Wow, thank you everyone, and thank you Mr Sawyer! i got a little excited after Sawyer posted here, so i've been burning the midnight oil on this project. i'm very motivated right now.

Big update!

First up,
a shot of some of the junk i thought may be useful for the 'details' of the helmet and mask.

i decided to try out gluing my pep files directly onto plastic and bandsaw cutting them.. not a bad result in the end, but extra sanding required to removed the paper later.

i also began work on part of the right ear piece.

and used a heat gun to heat a strip of plastic against the ear, and helmet, to create a support for some extra insurance it doesnt break off.

and i've finished the left ear blub, which i don't seem to have a shot of right now.. it was half a clear Christmas bauble. (tis the season?)
i may add some holes into it do i don't get noise bouncing around as much inside the mask.

ive made a sort of headset cable that will come out from the right earset, and plus into the mask around the right lower cheek.
it's got a piece of metal tubing around a small part of it to make it look more "natural" and actually a piece of existing tech.

this is the makings of the larger camera on the side of the helmet.

the switch could potentially work, and there is a plastic lens in the front of the camera.. if someone were to give me some advice on how to rig a simple LED setup connected to this switch, then i could easily have a working light for it.
to go with the eyes.

i've taken a wireless network ariel and added a telescopic "thingy" to it, for the helmets ariel.

slapped some bondo on the camera to improve the design, will wait for it to cure and then trim it down to a nicer shape.

i'm a fan of striking the iron when it's hot, or rther, trimming the bondo when it's not yet hard.. with what you say? these handy tools.

see bondo gets slowly harder (like i'm waiting for over a half hour right now for it to set enough that i can trim away at it like clay) my choices are, trim now or sand alot more later..

speaking of bondo.. denting a fiberglass helmet liner is not possible.. i tested this by giving it a god few whacks with a ballpeen hammer with no effect.. other than my wife laughing at me..

so i took a knife to the area, and cut a hole, as well as taped it over for my plan..

i slapped a bunch of bondo into the hole, from the inside.

and then pushed the other side of the hole a little with my finger.
no idea if this will work, but hopefully it will make a good looking dent in the helmet.. i feel like a post apoc bobba fett..

now i've been planning on going for the colt single action route for my armaments.. but you know.. i've always liked the NCR flag..

why buy one though.. when you can buy two, and cut the head off one, to stitch to the other!

now, i need to add the lettering too.. i considered taking a few letters from the cut up flag, but i decided to use a test piece and see how well painters tape works on a flag, when you use that rubber paint plastidip spray.

no bleed whatsoever!

so lets use this knowledge for practical .. practice.

needs some dirt, and bullets holes, tattered edges and such.. but i really like this, and it was very fast and very easy to do.
i could easily make more.

Oh btw man I'm not hating and the flag is a freakin awesome job but I thought the bears looked a lil more menacing than that . . The bottom one just looks like he's sad lol . . The NCR shoulda picked a Yao Gui for a mascot from fallout 3

Cool, I learned something new today: I never knew that the NCR flag was so similar to California republic's bear logo.

it's surprising how few people know the state flags,
i personally found it an awesome touch that the flags of the NCR are just modified 'old world' californian flags.

as for the electronic thing, the costume will be wearable by the 7th.

the helmet cam and eyes will probably not be glowing at that time.
