NCR Veteran Ranger costume

Post » Fri Sep 25, 2009 9:35 pm

Some time ago, i asked for some help with some PC screenshots of new vegas for good reference on the coat, helmet and armor of the NCR veteran rangers.
i got alot of help, and i'm very grateful.
so heres some of my progress.

i've started with the armored riot vest first.

i drew a paper plan by hand, eye'ballin' it and then copied a symetrical version of it to card stock till i was satisfied,
after that i cut the shapes in foam.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/P9180595.jpg

and rounded the edges
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9220602.jpg

started to form them into good shapes with some heat.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9220601.jpg

and then glued them down, as well as using some elastic strapping to make a "rig" for the vest to be wearable.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230603.jpg
the black duster is a place holder till i make the proper coat, but it's to give an impression of how the coat will hang on the armor.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230604.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230605.jpg

a little dorky right now, but i think it's ready for some battle damage, weathering and some stencil paints.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9230607.jpg

the next step is to get the mask looking proper.
this is a test to see what i can do with papercraft, or as it's known in some parts pepakura.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/kaikaiAA/Vaultdwell/P9250617.jpg

the next step is to make it out of plastic, and make sure it's reinforced enough to be light, tough, and perhaps.. airsoft safe.

edit: hmm no image linking, okay, i'll switch them to just links.

With the black trench coat, you look more like a Brotherhood of Nod soldiers from Command and Conquer than an NCR Ranger.

Also, don't make it too tight or you won't be able to wear it after Thanksgiving.

haha if i do gain a few pounds over thanksgiving, i'll be losing them in time for when the costume is finished.

thanks for the comments guys,
and yes, as i said, the black tenchie is just a placeholder, (and NOD are great badguys) the trenchcoat will be the last part of the costume that will be finished, but it will be worth it.
my intent is to go for accuracy as a priority.

edit: oh my plans for the lenses are to use airsoft goggle lenses, and attach window tinting to them, as well as perhaps line them with EL Wire to give them the glow.

Wow! Unanimously, this should be considered perfect to anyone with a visually-optometric comparability anologous to acute sagacity with one in-game NCR Veteran Ranger suit.

right,
have been hacking and bending away at this metal helmet with limited success.. i guess since the thing was made to deflect bullets, i should have expected it to be tough to shape.
i'll be grinding and cutting a few pieces off and then applying some bondo before i distress it further and give it a desert waste color.

needs more off the sides i think.

the wife stole the mask earlier too, before i chopped it up.

and i'm chopping up half the mask to make templates from, so i can reassemble the mask in plastic over thanksgiving holiday.

I'm not sure how much fine detail you'll put in once you're done doing the basic construction, but you should add fade and fine cosmetic cuts to add that veteran soldier look. So far though, it's looking very nice, alot better than I could ever do

Very nicely done. It's shaping up great and I'm sure you'll be able to find a duster that fits. To me they reminded me of the old WWII longcoats, so a visit to an Army dumpstore would be your best bet :)

EDIT: Nevermind, it seems to be an old Cowboy Longcoat :P

Greetz,

Milt
