necromancy illegal in Morrowind

Post » Fri Nov 26, 2010 12:31 pm

Whats the real in depth reason why necromancy is illegal in MW and I assume no where else in Tamriel?

Please, no Imperial Library reference because it is of coarse, an Imperialistic viewpoint there of.
I mean after all, who are they? Why do YOU think it's illegal or should be? Lets play the role
here!

I'm pretty sure it's illegal mainly because the Dunmer have enormous respect for their dead, what with ancestor worship and everything. I think they'd see necromancy as a grave (no pun intended) violation of the deceased. I mean, how would you feel if someone re-animated your grandma and made her fight for them? Pretty bad, I'd say!

I like you. You made me lmao. Plus I have a new respect for my grandma. Thanks! Then again she's been gone for
a while and I miss her...so seeing her again fighting for whomever would please me... oddly.

I'd punch my grandma is she ever became undead. Y'know, because, you gotta defend yourself somehow. I would just imagine undead-Nana is Wesley Crusher or someone.

Huh?

The Dunmer hate necromancy. Any law against it likely predated the Armistice and was continued during Imperial rule.

Except in the case of sacred necromancy, which is praiseworthy. Recycling sainted Aunt Oryne's soul to reinforce the family ghostfence, or donating her to the Great Ghostfence, is an act of great piety. And binding drunken old Uncle Athyn to guard the family tomb, making him more useful in death than he ever was in life, is the height of practicality.

Man, I thought my family had odd little quirks. Maybe the Dunmer should think about counseling or something.

Well, the Dunmer did have the Tribunal as the highest authority for quite a long time.

Please, no Imperial Library reference because it is of coarse, an Imperialistic viewpoint there of.

You misunderstand - the Imperial Library is a real website, not a library in the game. And the people there (real people) aren't biased; even if they were, it wouldn't matter. The Imperial Library is simply a website that lists all available texts from the various TES games - plus some extra stuff, like discussions or "papers" about certain lore aspects.
Referencing to the Imperial Library is pretty much the only way to "prove" your point of view based on what knowledge concerning the topic is available. Yes, some texts are pro-Imperialistic (or anti-Imperialistic), but since we know that, we can deal with it.

Therefore...
http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/ancestor.shtml
It's a book called "Ancestors and the Dunmer", and it's written by a Dunmer (not a real person). It actually contains anti-Imperialistic notions.

That's because it's endorsed by their religion. So there may seem to be a bit of a double standard here to those with a separate viewpoint, since necromancy for secular reasons is seen as evil, but doing the same thing in a sacred ritual is perfectly fine. Of course, to them, this seems perfectly logical, as it's precisely because of that notion that sacred necromancy is practiced legally.

Fair enough...I can accept that. Thanks for the link.

Good laugh. OK, why do we assume the undead are all evil. Therefore the quote from Dogsbody:
"Except in the case of sacred necromancy, which is praiseworthy. Recycling sainted Aunt Oryne's
soul to reinforce the family ghostfence, or donating her to the Great Ghostfence, is an act of great
piety. And binding drunken old Uncle Athyn to guard the family tomb, making him more useful in
death than he ever was in life, is the height of practicality" quote, is what he says, "practical". I mean
after all, why burn old tires or throw them in the landfill when we can shred them and make mulch
for our pretty little flower beds. I like this answer the best. I believe there are ethics and great
responsibility with powers like that. Its probably best that our real life powers are suppressed
because quite frankly we couldn't handle them. LOL...we'd running around shooting fireballs
and electric bolts instead of using bullets.

I'd punch my grandma is she ever became undead. Y'know, because, you gotta defend yourself somehow. I would just imagine undead-Nana is Wesley Crusher or someone.

It's really a question of ownership. YOU can use YOUR grandpa's soul for your own purposes, and I can use MY grandpa's soul for my own purposes, but YOU cannot use MY grandpa's soul for YOUR purposes: that's a violation of myself and my family, more than just a kind of theft. The Empire has similar laws banning the use of people's souls without the individual's permission, but I suspect that the difference is that in the Empire, the soul is the property of the individual, and can be disposed of as he sees fit; whereas among the Dunmer, the soul is family property, and non-transferable to boot.

Well, I do question theft because a soul has no weight or mass, its un-material by nature. Now I do agree it would
be considered very disrespectful. Then again what are laws but agreed upon consideration of the majority rule.
I'm personally not a fan of the majority rule because it discriminates the minority WHICH could be right.

Thanks for your ideas on this, they are interesting and I believe hold truth to the concept of the creators of this RPG.

The impression I always got was that, among the Dunmer "profane" necromancy is where a dead person's soul and/or corpse is used without permission, where as "sacred" necromancy is voluntary service on the part of whoever is becoming undead.

Not exactly - there are cases where an unwilling soul can be used. It has to be from the user's clan/house, and is usually a form of sanction. The idea is that one has obligation toward his family, and death doesn't end them. So you can be dragged back kicking and screaming into the fold for the good of the family even after you're dead.

Note that most of the se restrictions are applied to what is considered as people. For more than a few dunmers, khajits and argonians are clever beast and not peoples, and what you're doing with their bodies and what passes for their souls (they're not peoples, so no 'true' soul according to that point of view) isn't an issue. Some would even dump humans into that category.

Whoa! Now my head is spinning from this one. Great point. Is it being stolen from a material device that controls the security
and password? Good topic!

So now I'm back to a question.... is a "soul" in a soulgem the actual soul prevented from going to the Dreamsleeve? Or, is the soul in a soul gem the soul energy released when the soul leaves the mortal coil?

The former. Redgaurd made a point of this. Gameplay wise, it's used like the latter though, especially Oblivion.

Though, in DF, if the said soul gem enchanted weapon broke, doesn't the soul that did resided in the soul gem spring right out and attack the person?

I think that that's more fluff than anything else.

Of course, I didn't really play Daggerfall to death.

Thats a good idea. Maybe someone should do a mod were if you fail to make an enchanted item
the once trap soul would attack you.

The issue in Morrowind is the desecration of Dunmer bodies or enslavement of Dunmer souls.
Necromancy praticed on imperials or Argonians = :goodjob: :woot:
