Necromancy in Skyrim

Interesting, but how would you be able to progress such a skill. It's akin to having a 'Sorcerer' skill or 'Fighter' skill. Which, would be too broad to be a skill in itself. Necromancy is more of a class than a skill.
Hidden Factions within a guild; specialized factions that require a minimum standing in a general guild (say.. Mage Guild) in order to be accepted. "Sub guild" members/merchants, would have additional/alternate dialog and quest options and/or services for other "sub guild" members. (and not just for Necromancy; Assassins, additional Mage specialists, and other guilds and specialized guilds as well. There need to be more anyway no?)

Necromancy is about reanimating dead bodies, especially when it comes to preparing bodies, like adding spikes or wrapping zombies as mummies, strengthening the joints of skeletons, etc. So how is it too broad of a school of magic?

One doesn't shoot black magic out of their finger tips or something silly of that kind of sort. It's, pretty much, just reanimating dead bodies. Ripping someone's soul out would be mysticism, and summoning a ghost would require one to be skilled in conjurations, as that person is ripping a soul out of the Dreamsleeve and bringing it to Mundus.

I simply like the cultural impact of having things that are taboo in some provinces be alright in others. Things like the acceptance of slavery in Morrowind lend the world a more convincing cultural diversity.

Necromancy could play a similar role in Skyrim, but only if it fits with Nord culture (which I'm not sure about). Regardless, those crazy nords should have some manner of perverse-but-locally-acceptable behaviors :)

Being based on traditional Nordic people and/or Vikings it's rather likely that they practice Viking funerals. I really can't see people who send their great warriors into the ocean and set the boat aflame being all that happy with any of their people walking the earth as the undead.

They might walk around with their enemies heads though, if Bethesda is willing to get a bit R instead of PG-13

Considering the draugr I think nords would be pretty iffy about necromancy on the whole.. But stealing is frowned upon too :P It would be nice if it was fleshed out more.

Yeah it would be cool if they 'fleshed' out the Draugr a bit more in Skyrim. As undeath is a curse that is bestowed upon Nords who resort to cannibalism to survive, I just can't see Necromancy being a discernible 'faction' in Skyrim. That's not to say we won't get some Mannimarco-type character who holds sway over a domain of Draugr somewhere....

Who else would like to see Bethesda allow necromancy to be put into a better light? I'm tired of having to kill them in every game! *cough* OB mage's guild *cough* Even in morrowind it was strictly illegal! I'm tired of hearing about how necromancy is ok in other places, but it seems whenever we go somewhere its not, or we have to fight it. Let us stand up for those necromancers!

Considering how they're always presented as cartoonish card-carrying villains, it probably won't happen.

Seems like you are already a skilled Necromancer. You employed thread necromancy without any problem

On a serious note, Necromancy won't be it's own skill since it's confirmed there will only be 5 magic schools. However, I would like to see it be a faction you can join but it makes it impossible for you to join the Mages Guild and vice versa.

Add re-animation spells (the one spell and the one staff in oblivion were a joke)

Allow for the harvesting of body parts to be used in alchemy.

A soul trap spell to capture human souls? (The whole "Black Soul Gem" idea was fun, but a pain in the ass to use regularly.)

Creation of zombies/ flesh atronachs at higher levels.

Turning people into thralls.

And add a guild of some sort. Crossing my fingers that this is the reason the mages guild was turned into two different agencies.

Hey folks, just here to say I misread the title of this thread as being "Pregnancy in Skyrim" while scrolling too quickly. Carry on.

There should be sub categories, for example if you level up your conjuration you should be able to pick a specialization like undead or daedra.

The reason human souls aren't allowed to be absorbed into Grand Soul Gems is that it would be too easy to get your souls to enchant with. I thought the Black Soul Gem system was perfect, you had to actually go out of your way to be able to get the ability to use human souls to enchant your armor to max. Plus it added a new realm of RP to Oblivion. I say kudos to Bethesda for making the Black Soul Gem system and I am looking forward to it's return.
