Need advice on what to merge and not to

Ok, I'm at 255 and I need to make some room for future mods ( 2 UL and some patches now, but you never know what awesome stuff is gonna come out tomorrow :biggrin: )

I'm kinda stuck, I've read through all the available documentation about Gecko and found a nice thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1212741-merge-suggestion/page__hl__merge+suggestion__fromsearch__1

I don't agree on some of the suggestions in that one though: I don't think merging mods with different bash tags and then use manual tagging is a good practice ( you'd be missing tags added by BOSS in the future )

I'll check each merged plugin for errors in TES4Edit, then rename it to the main one of the merged ones and check order of master files.

what I'm not sure about is how to use priority values in Gecko, some help would be much appreciated.

I'd also like to be able to merge the SM plugins refurbished for frostcrag, SI and horse armor, so if anyone knows how I'm all ears :biggrin:

use Merge for UOP and UOPS, rename to UOP ( it has all the tags UOPS has )

Merge DLCshiveringisles ( it's actually putmeinmyplace renamed ) , USIP and USIPS. rename to USIP, rename various BSA to USIP - something.bsa

This is going to seem harsh, blunt, or whatever, but you're off the reservation at this point. If you're contemplating mass merging on the scale you're proposing you need to already know what is safe and what's not safe to merge. The reason there's very few if any useable guides on this subject is because it's more or less Black Magic™ as far as Oblivion modding goes.

You can't rely on BOSS anymore, especially if you're intentionally going to deceive it by renaming things to look like what they're not. You can't assume the automated tagging from Wrye Bash will remain workable because those are based on where the individual mods go. So you MUST resign yourself to knowing what each tag is for and manually tagging your merge files.

You can't reliably use patches intended for the source mods once you've merged the content. Gecko tries its best, but it CANNOT guarantee you'll get the same form IDs in the end product that the original pair starts with. You're proposing merging multiple unrelated mods together, further complicating this.

It's very easy to bite yourself in the ass when Gecko decides to add masters you don't want, or worse, it adds a mod as a master to itself. Seen it happen. It's a bit messy to undo.

Gecko has a bug where certain things will not merge correctly with multiple master mods. I ran into this with OC Reborn when I was merging the B&M module. It didn't know what to do with XMarkerHeading targets that weren't pointing to the 01 index, so it botched the form IDs. That leads to CTD problems if you aren't aware of what to look for and don't know how to interpret TES4Edit's "check for errors" output. Some of what's on your list will run into this problem. Most likely anything to do with the Integration mod since it has multiple masters.

Best advice I can give you for now - back up your game. Experiment with simple single master files (Oblivion.esm only) and check the results. There's lots of stuff you can get away with this on that probably won't care where it loads.

Also, and this is of rather extreme importance. DO NOT do all this on an existing save you intend to try and push through this. You'll regret that.

the reason why I want to try this now is exactly that, I don't want to start a game and have some new must-have pop up and force me to merge something during an ongoing game ( gasp! ) or go through my list choosing stuff to leave out to make room for the new goodies :lol:

so 1. don't merge stuff that has patches

2. don't merge stuff that has different masters

3. only merge mods that load close together in the masterlist so as not to disrupt LO ( already doing this )

4. mods with different bash tags but identical master can be merged, but I'll have to tag them manually ( add tags from both mods ) ? it seems like this is better than merging mods with different masters.

very well, thanx to Arthmoor's insight I have managed to merge some mods without anything going wrong in the process

so far I have merged:

Better Blocking + Phitt's Phighting Phixes + I Just Hit You + Creature Damage Fix

Enchantment Restore + Phitt's Worthwhile Thievery ( wanted to add Hear No Evil too, but it gave some error so I've left it alone )

tried to merge Ngcd with it's Oghma Infinium tweak, but despite tejon himself stating it can be done in the readme, this didn't work ( I guess Gecko didn't like the fact one of them got Fundament as master and the other got Oblivion.esm )

merged LAME's bgmagicbonus + bgmagicalchemy ( left out paperchase as it got some ITM I was unsure if should be cleaned or not )

merged supreme magicka's shivering isles + enchantstaff

merged enhanced vegetation + less predictable respawn + respawning varla/welkynd stones + soulgem magic , gave it Scripts tag for the last two to work correctly.



so far so good, I'll see about some others and leave alone anything that could be updated or cause any issues.

for the record, I've also removed new lands mods for the time being to save CPU cycles ( I tend to stay in tamriel anyway... ) : Dibella's Watch, Cybiades and Windfall

and I removed Glenvar Castle for good, as I already have Shezrie's Towns, Faregyl Village AND Lost Spires adding stuff to that area :lol:

it doesn't interfere, but it's obviously too much stuff for the system to handle and it gets crashy around there. had a similar issue with UL rolling hills and its many spawns alongside with all the other spawns from WAC and FCOM :D

I'm almost done, I had managed to merge AWLS + Rainbows + Idle Dialogue + Reener's Notes Mod + Diverse Grasses but I'll redo that from scratch since AWLS is updated often.

tried to merge QLM + Cleanup + Display Stats + FormID finder + Vacuity + Athletics While Riding. Cleanup and Vacuity did not agree with that so I merged the others and left them alone.

also I've scrapped enhanced vegetation + less predictable respawn + respawning varla/welkynd stones + soulgem magic and redone it:

I've merged Respawning Varla and Welkynd Stones + Soulgem Magic since they both have scripts, then merged the others in a separate .esp

I've tried merging Temple Discrict Repaired and Bruma Guild Restored but the latter didn't agree, so I've left it alone and merged Temple District Repaired with Better Stealth Entrances instead :D

I prefer doing merges that are small and theme based.

So I have merges of hotkey & menu mods. Then of small game tweaks. Then of dialogues (there are quite a few dialogue adding mods).

I never touch merging mods that alter the world space at all. Those always amounted in failure that you just don't always spot right away - even if you examine in the CS and turn grass off and ~tcl off and wander around - eventually something always reared its head.

Small script based mods grouped thematically are the winning combo while large land altering mods have always been nothing but a pain.

Also I never merge a mod that one needs to keep installed throughout the game or that would cause grief if I had to uninstall it.

that's also some good info that I'm following :)

the only landscape alterations I've merged are two UL patches for Kragenir's Death Quest, which should be fine since I'm pretty Vorians created the Merged UL patch for KDQ with Gecko.

I've left all UL, villages, quests and locations alone, and avoided anything with a patch, either filter or not.

I didn't see this before - I have an ongoing list of mods that i was able to merge together successfully (about 100+ total merged mods in about 10 separate merges). Do remember to rename BSAs for mods that have any. Most of my merged mods were thanks to advice from Psymon and PetrusOctavianus. Once I get back home, I'll be able to post these lists...
