I'm trying to immerse myself and get into cooking, however I can't seem to locate butter.

You can churn one, but after that they don't seem to respawn.

Anyone have any great cooking tips? favorite recipes?

I buy butter from innkeepers. They don't usually have a lot, maybe Carlotta in Whiterun? Or that Dunmer in Windhelm that sells food? My favourite thing to make is Elsweyr Fondue.

Yeah, you have to buy it. Sometimes you can find it on bandits - I also found it on some Stormcloaks tonight in one of our battles.

The churn respawns eventually, right?

They're bugged - sometimes they will not respawn. It's the same bug that causes harvestable plants all over Skyrim to not respawn.

If you're playing on the PC, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31268/? will fix the bug.

Unfortunately, butter is one of the rarest resources in Skyrim.

You can buy it from innkeepers and from dedicated food vendors (there's one in every major town), each will typically have 1-3 or none.

Very rarely it appears in random loot on bandits and suchlike.

The churn is bugged like was said above and will never respawn. There's also one sample pre-placed on the oven when it is constructed in a Hearthfire home.
