We need to change the way weapons are named

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 6:45 pm

I absolutely love the level of customization we have in regards to weapons, but the names of the weapons really need to go before the mods (or just add a + next to the name and we can inspect it from there).

If I want to equip my .44 pistol via pipboy, I should find it in the "4"s. Instead, I'm looking for something along the lines of "Recon Advanced Bull Barreled Comfort .44 pistol". This is made worse when the weapon has so many prefixes that the whole name doesn't fit in the screen (hard to find that .44 pistol when I'm looking for "Recon Advanced Bull Barrel..." I know I can name weapons, but I shouldn't have to.

It baffles me as to how this made it to the final product.

Or...you could just use the "rename" feature yourself and name it anything you want.

I put a "-" in front of all my equipped gear to make it stay at the top of the list.

Yup.

But I understand the OP's lament. I sounds like a dbase functionality of some sort to me. An auto gen'd name based on random components list. Not real helpful when sorting through weapons picked up after a fire-fight. Armor, same-same.

I've been carefully suping up my 10mm pistol, Billy. I also have a shadowed leather chest piece called Your Mom. I have a shotgun called Hurp. A laser musket called Takalili.

I remember when they added spell crafting to Oblivion you could also name your new spells. I made a spell that cast burden called 50lb Genitals.

It's all about the name.

I don't really have a good one for that.

I DO have a good story for why I now name all my characters Beth, though:

When I make a character I'll show my wife what I've done and ask her what I should name them. In Diablo 3 I made a sorceress and I did that. My wife was kind of distracted- checking work email (bad idea always) and she said I should cal her Beth, which I did. Like two hours later when she wasn't busy she decided to jump in on my game and tank for me. In town she walked past my banner, which said Beth, and my wife looks at me and says, "Who the f**k is Beth?!"

I laughed and explained, and the laughed too (luckily) when she realized that she was just too svcked into her work stuff and didn't even remember she named my character. So now if I make a female character her name is Beth.

Yeah, can be bypassed by using the rename feature. As a creativity challenged individual, i just rename the ones i intend to keep with "weapon class - ammo type". So Pistol - .44, or Sniper - Plasma :hehe:

Yeah, my 10mm pistol is creatively named "-Cassandra's Sidearm" :whistling:

(The sniper rifle is at least "-Ma Bell".... reach out and touch someone. :P)

Modded weapons to date I've renamed:

10mm Pistol - Betty

Rifle - Veronica

Shotgun - Marianne

Fatman - Skipper

Junk Jet - Gilligan

I was in a mood or probably heard/saw something about the Archies and Gilligan and didn't even know it! *dang subliminal subconscious BS*

I always rename my keepers anyway. Some weapons deserve names.

My Top Three:

Irradiated Double-barrel Shotty - Afterglow

.50 Cal Sniper - The Bad Touch

I can't take credit for this one - my friend made it, but it's a Suppressed .308 Sniper Rifle called Windbreaker. I can't help but grin over that one.

Honorable mention: I don't use miniguns, but as a Neal Stephenson fan I can hardly have a Minigun and not call it Reason 4.0. There, hopefully that will make me look high-brow enough that you'll all forgive me for thinking the fart joke was so funny.

Holy smoke- I was just thinking how great it would be to have a gun called Windbreaker. Especially if you could make a mod so that it made fart sound effect when you fired it.

Oh, I'm sure it will come. In the meantime, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be stealing the name - I'll smile like an idiot every time I pull it out. I'm such a child... lol.

I have read some Neal Stephenson, but did not get the reference. A bit of research... Snow Crash. Haven't read it yet, but it is on my list. Cryptonomicon is probably one of my all time favorite novels. Recently read (audiobook) Seveneves, also a pretty good read. I have read book 1 of the Baroque cycle, and will get to the rest. On a fantasy kick at the moment, currently trying Joe Abercrombie. Some fantastic character development there.

I think Windbreaker will probably find its way into all of our weapons lockers at this point! :tops:

Oh man, this turned into a fun gun name thread...

I named my first proper sniping pistol and rifle the Sneaky Bugger and the Sneaky Bigger respectively. Kellogg's gun is now Special K. And the Junkie's Rifle (although I never use it - I don't do the whole addiction thing) goes by... Crack Shot.

I plan to add a "off-set" container that can be accessed anywhere...

Basically anything that's not needed or will be sold is put there.

I named my boxing glove "Tyson's Fist" and my silenced 10mm "ButterBee".

Piper has her own set of gear :P

The main problem is that If you don't take any perks in modding and are completely relying on finding mods, the weapon/armor naming system doesn't give you any vital information.. you still have to physically inspect the item to see if it has a mod that you are currently looking for. It's however even worse with armor since the most vital statistic of weather or not it's normal, heavy or sturdy armor is left out. You then have to rely on the damage resistance of the armor to tell you which it is. .. "ok.. shadowed floral hepatitis leather chest piece.. is a 12!.. Nope I need above a 14 to have a chance at it being sturdy."

The default naming system does exactly what you say so why would you need to rename anything if you want weapon names to describe the weapons' specifications?

Also why would you NOT take any modding perks?!?!?!? You're missing out BIG TIME!

My twoshot silenced recon .50 sniper rifle is called Mercy.

Haven't named any other weapons/items yet, though I've been trying to figure a good name for an instigating recon gauss rifle (with the silencer mod).

My biggest issue is that you can't tell what armor tier is on the enemies if the armor is named. For example, if it's regular, sturdy or heavy, it doesn't say if they're already modded. So you have to pick them up and check their DR manually. It would be nice to be able to tell at a glance.

I agree completely, although, it helps when you keep your inventory clean. I also find that using the favorites system helps cut down on this as well. Still, making a modded 10MM Pistol and then coming out of the weapons workbench is still a real pain when it's called "Advanced Long Recon Tactical Hardened 10MM Pistol". :lmao:

I renamed my 10mm pistol "My Gun". Yeah, not terribly creative, but I always picture him saying stuff like "Don't touch My Gun!" or "You can have My Gun when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers!"

I had a .38 pipe gun I modded into a sniper that I called "Don't Run," but I soon found a .308 hunting rifle I modded with a longer stock and a scope.

I call her "Bessie."
