Need to Find a GPU That Will Work With 250 Watt PSU

Post » Fri Aug 14, 2009 7:45 pm

Hey guys, I'm an Xbox 360 gamer, but I'm wanting to get a good cheap GPU that I can use to run the original Crysis. I'm getting Crysis 2 on 360, but I'd like to be able to experience the original Crysis. My PC is a Compaq Presario CQ5210Y. It has an AMD Athlon II X2 processor, 3 GB DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE (svcks horribly), and a 250 watt power supply unit. I've been looking at some GPU's I can afford, but most of them say a minimum recommended power supply of 350 or 400. Are there any GPU's that you guys know of that will work well with a 250 watt power supply and not strain my system? I was really looking into this GPU. The GPU doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, just as long as it can run Crysis fairly well.

first of all,you have a pci-e or agp expansion slot?(you can google that in case you dont know what is a pci-e or agp)

in case of pci-e,i would go for a 5670/5650 its NOT a gaming card but will do,

there are other factors like bottlenecking, since you cpu is not the fastest,i would recomend running physics at medium/low and audio high/medium in order to avoid bottlenecks.

anyway,i would change the psu,if not the whole pc :) PSUs are inexpensive this days

a corsair CX 400w is really cheap, but if you buy a psu, probably you cant afford a new gpu...

i assume you dont expect to play at 1080p with that...

about that 8400gt,well,it will play on low @ 800x600...

be sure to have a nice couple of fans in your case since this gpu in internal exhaust

psu is one of the pc most important components,it should be your next upgrade

According to this, yes, he has a PCI-E slot: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01861133&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&site=null&product=4005902&key=null#N74

I would honestly not recommend adding anything to that system on a dodgy OEM 250w PSU as i can almost guarantee you that if it even does run, it won't be for long.

Spend a small amount of money adding a better, aftermarket PSU to the system (assuming that it supports standard ATX sized PSU's and isn't some little brick PSU) and then add an aftermarket graphics card.

Without upgrading the PSU you run the risk of bringing the entire system down.

Well, I guess I'd be better off saving up some money and building a nice rig from scratch. I'm currently looking for a job but should get one pretty soon so it should be pretty easy to save up some money to build a really nice rig. The only thing that svcks is having to buy Windows 7. That's $200 down the drain right there. I already have it on my PC now and I love it but that much for an OS is crazy in my opinion.

but,you only can install the oem version in 1 pc :(

I just saw that on newegg.com this morning! I'm really considering getting one of those DIY kits.

i have that mobo and an i7 950,everything is awesome, but,i got watercooling and the NB get too hot,so,use air cooling.

if you dont want to complicate everything get one of those, seems ok,but,if you get that,please...buy crysis 2 for pc.

i dont know, what kind of screen do you have,it should be 1080p or better for that rig, otherwise its overkill.

if you can get 570 the better, performs like a 480 but with less vram

also get one of those,it will protect you against ESD (electrostatic discharge),just connect it in any metal thing connecting to the ground

So air cooling will be sufficient enough? Also, I was planning on hooking the rig up to my 32" HDTV and using a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can play comfortably. My HDTV can display in 720p and 1080i, but not 1080p. That's fine though right?
