Do I need to have played Oblivion/Morrowind to understand Sk

Post » Sun Oct 02, 2011 11:43 pm

I have never played an Elder Scrolls game, but Skyrim really caught my eye. Is there a storyline that continues from Oblivion that I will not understand, or will it be fine?

while it would better help your lore understanding. each game is it's own. skyrim is set 200 years after oblivion and as such things will probably have moved on a bit since then

No each game is a separate entity. You may get passing references but that is it. However I would seriously consider buying Oblivion before hand.

You don't need to at all, no. But you may really like the older games, and you'll get a sense of what has gone before. Enjoy!

I would buy Oblivion just to get a feel of an Elder Scroll game before Skyrim.

Nope and you know why? Because when you start exploring Skyrim you're going to find all sorts of books for sale or as loot. Read them. They'll tell you so much about what you need to know about the lore. Hopefully Bethesda has written new books to tell the tale of Oblivion as well.

The best, most authoritative book I can recommend for you to get your lore is called "ABCs for Barbarians." Keep an eye out for it. ;)

Not neccesarily. Though maybe you would like to play Oblivion or Fallout 3, to get the feeling.

You should probably just go ahead and play Skyrim, like everyone else said. TES has a habit of having a huge in-game library of books; should be more than easy to catch up on tidbits. And storylines always separate from game to game. Just the same universe.

You must play every elder scrolls game in order with 5 years in between each to understand skyrim.

Not necessarily play Oblivion/Morrowind, but if you go to Imperial-Library/uesp and read some lore it will help you a lot. Here are some things I recommend reading for starters before playing Skyrim :

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/definitive-guide-dwemer
http://www.imperial-library.info/content/races-tamriel
http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nine-divines-akatosh (Note : Akatosh IS Alduin. They are 2 different names given by 2 different religions to the same entity. Imperials view him as the creator and Nords view him as the harbringer of the Apocalypse.)

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/races-tamriel-nord
http://www.imperial-library.info/content/pocket-guide-empire-first-edition-skyrim
http://www.imperial-library.info/content/cosmology
http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Lorkhan
http://www.imperial-library.info/content/guide-daedra
http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Aedra

Happy reading :)
