Need help cutting down Mods list

:foodndrink: After getting an i5/GTX470 system which can actually (finally!) run Oblivion properly as well as a healthy supply I mods I rather went into overkill. By which I'm talking something in the range of 400~ mods. Since then I've taken the jack to the stack and I've broken it down to something close to 280. I believe 255 was the limit on mods?
So I'm still trying to eat away from the list but given I've never used them, but like the look of them, its proving difficult. This isn't a loading order so that doesn't have to be worried about, but this IS a list of all the mods I still have lined up (with the exclusion of apps like Wyre Bash and the assorted Unique Landscapes Mods).

If anyone could tell me if any of these are just outright BAD, don't cooperate with the rest, or have problems that might spoil them, I'd love as much feedback as I can get. Just take a look and see if there's anything you hate~

The 254 limit is the number of plugins (esp's), not the number of mods. I see a few in that list that don't even have plugins, so you may not be as badly off as you thought. You can also merge a number of those into your Bash patch, so the plugin will be deselected and not count towards the limit. I think there's also a limit to the number of files you can have in your data directory. I believe that's 400 or so, so when you start merging plugins, this is the number to keep an eye on.

There are some guides posted around here for tips on merging mods with tes4gecko, like here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1068317-a-guide-to-merging-with-tesivgecko-second-thread/page__hl__tes4gecko

However as previously mentioned, wrye bash alone would take care alot of merging - so start with that and see where you're at number-wise. I have 270 esm/esps in my loadorder atm but thanks to Wrye Bash only 186 of those are actually loaded, the rest are merged into the bashed patch. That's quite a lot of mods merged into one. :)

I do use TES4Gecko aswell though, but I've only merged a few tiny mods.

You can drop Helbornes Orc and Argonian zombies they're integrated in MMM IIRC
theres also a wrye bash ini tweak to remove the border, so you can drop that .esp has well :)

Neither. Use RAEVWD if you're going to install a VWD mod. Those other two are not optimized at all and will cause you no end of trouble trying to use them.

I started going through your list. Then I thought there is just too much crap to sift though.

First, get rid of esp-less texture replacers or OBSE dll's. (I don't mean not use them - I mean take them out of that long assed list!)
Then take all the FCOM required and related mods and put them into a different list.
Then add any game changers like realistic fatigue, health, rag dolls, etc.
Then add major quest mods like The Lost Spires, Heart of the Dead, Windfall, etc.
This will be your core gameplay list.

What's left is what you need to whittle down / merge. Then ask for help.

A minor clarification to Andalay's post - you can have up to 256 absolute total active files.
All esp's AND esm's (including Oblivion.esm) AND your save game (.ess) are counted. Not just esp's.

That is one long list, I agree with the post above..you need to organize your list.

Pretty sure there is a regional bounty system in reneers guard overhaul, so no use for sm regional bounty

The loaded save game counts as esp #255 (starting from 0). That's why all items created ingame gets formId that starts with FF, because their "mod" is the savegame - and that's why changes stored in the savegame always overrides mods, since the savegame loads last.

I knew about the loaded save, I thought aellis meant that Oblivion also takes into account all other saves, which sounds silly to me...

You can replace the "lootable armor" mods (Dark Saint, IC Palace, and maybe the lich helms) with a single esp - there are several that allow all lootable armor, and I believe Wrye Bash has a tweak too.

Likewise, I think Jump Adjustment is a tweak.

Reduced Running Backwards Speed might be subsumed into Deadly Reflex (I know some combat mods allow you to tweak that, or adjust it automatically)

Rusty Items is mostly included in OOO

Don't use Operation Optimization - it doesn't do anything.

I notice you have Open Cities and Better Cities. Be prepared to ditch a lot of other mods due to lack of compatibility - most have patches for one or the other, but not both. I used to use OBC, but finally went to straight BC; having a short load screen at the gate is more than an equal tradeoff for improved framerates and the ability to use more mods without problems.

And speaking of patches... with FCOM and all those quest/location mods (especially BC), you're going to need a lot of patches. Better start checking up on those to see what you need. Personally, I'd start with the core install like aellis said, then start adding other stuff, using Wrye Bash to keep track of what you have. Once you reach a number that feels like "too much", you can start trimming it down.
