Need help on stuttering and verifying!

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:38 am

I have been experiencing stuttering ever since I started playing NV and it's started to get annoying to the point that buying the ps3 version would somewhat put me at ease with this issue.

I have done the following so far while reading through the forums.

On High

1. Set screen effects on NONE.
2. Water Multisampling is on LOW. (I thought there would be an off option)
3. Vsync is ON.
4.1920x1080 resolution

Still I experience stuttering and FPS goes down from 60 to 40 and the occasional below 20.

1 More issue I got with this is NV seems to be missing 1 file and everytime I try to verify it sometimes download it and sometime it doesn't but the outcome will always be the same. I still have 1 missing file. I have done delete .ini from the My Documents section and even deleted all .ini's in the NV folder.

I am hoping that this would be fixed! I am a huge fallout fan and I don't want this to ruin my experience or make me stop playing the game altogether.

This is my DXdiag log

The 1 file failing Steam validation is a red herring. It's Steam redownloading the Steam install script for New Vegas; it's not even a part of New Vegas itself, just a file Steam uses. I really wish that was stickied information.

First, turn off Vsync in the launcher's options section. It's forced on regardless of that setting, and turning it on there can potentially be hurting your framerate further. Sadly you'll have to leave water multisampling on low due to an Nvidia driver bug. All other settings should be fine maxed out with that video card (aside from anti-aliasing, which also has rendering side-effects, especially on grass tufts and transparent particle effects; I'd recommend turning it off in the launcher's options section, then either forcing it on for New Vegas in your Nvidia control panel, or just gonig without AA entierly).

Anyhow, for non-3rd party options, you don't have many choices. In the game configuration file (Fallout_default.ini in your New Vegas folder, basically) you can set
[BackgroundLoad]bUseBackgroundFileLoader=1

which should split file loading off to another thread which ''could'' help keep file i/o from affecting your framerate as much.

Aside from that, the New Vegas Stutter Remover (NVSR), which is a plugin for the New Vegas Script Extender (NVSE), is your best bet. On a similar video card, that made a world of difference for me. I resisted the Stutter Remover for months, but now regret having waited.

Whoops, I forgot the links:
http://nvse.silverlock.org/
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34832

For NVSE you want http://nvse.silverlock.org/beta/nvse_2_beta12.7z.
For NVSR you want http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/download.php?id=98210.

Thanks for the links! I also downloaded New Vegas Error Corrections Bug FIxes - DLC + GRA. The read me was complicated so I just decided to paste the 3 files from the DLC + GRA folder to the NV data folder. I seriously don't know if I did the right thing.

I would like to add that I don't have any mods installed aside from all the DLC's. I will play and give feedback and I hope this works.

Sorry for the double post.

No more stuttering and I thank you for the help! I hope it doesn't come back in the long run. Does this fix cap my FPS to 30?

Oh, by default yeah, but you shouldn't need that with an Nvidia 460. In your New Vegas folder, go to Data\NVSE\Plugins and open sr_New_Vegas_Stutter_Remover.ini with Notepad (or some other text editor). Change MaximumFPS = 30 to MaximumFPS = 0 (0 means it's not capped by NVSR). You may as well also set iFPS_Frequency = 0, bFlushLog = 0, bEnableMessages = 0 to reduce NVSR's use of its logging.

Doing that will still make it stutter free and no crashes?

The framerate cap doesn't have to do with crashes, but a perception issue some people have. Some people ''perceive'' the framerate as smoother if it's lower. The stutter remover started its life as a simple framerate limiter. It evolved to be something that actually tweaks game code instead of a big fat placebo. For some reason, the framerate limiting is still set on by default. Heck, you might be one of the people who perceive the framerate as smoother when capped at 30; try setting it to 0, see if it makes stuttering appear worse/no different for you, and set if back to 30 if you don't like the change.

Those other settings reduce NVSR's logging so it's not writing to disk at regular intervals. They have nothing to do with performance or stability.

I'm fine with 30 I was just curious cause it was running at 60 before I installed that fix.

Any idea how do I fix that missing steam file?

Thanks for everything!

You can't. It's not missing. Steam will always redownload it when you verify. It doesn't hurt anything; just ignore it.
