Need help with TES4Gecko problem in Windows 7

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:40 am

Recently I installed Windows 7 Home Premium version to my computer. I do not have a problem installing and running any other program except the TES4Gecko.

After changing my temp directory in the start location as well as in the target to find the TES4Gecko.jar file I get a message that Java cannot find the Oblivion installation directory.

I have tried saving Oblivion and Gecko in different files but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

What is your Oblivion install folder? If it's the default(Program Files(x86))then Win7 and Vista have issues with the UAC.Create a Games folder in your C: directory and install Oblivion there.

I first tried making a new directory as I was aware of issues in Vista of allowing the game to install to the default directory. The new directory that I installed Oblivion to is C:\Games\Bathesda Softworks\Oblivion.

The TES4Gecko version I am using is 15.2 and I've installed it in it's own directory, in the Oblivion directory, on my desktop directory. regardless where I put it it cannot find the Oblivion install directory.

Just out of curiosity I did a clean install of Oblivion to the default drectory (Program Files(x86) and had the same results.

Make sure you have Java Run time 1.5.Go to TES4Gecko.jar and send to Desktop(create shortcut),go to properties it should look something like this where the "Games\Oblivion Tools" is where you installed TES4Gecko
Target Type: Application
Target Location: system32
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe -Xmx1200m -jar "C:\Games\Oblivion Tools\TES4Gecko 15.2\TES4Gecko.jar"<------this is my target.
Start in: C\Games
Do a new shortcut and when you go to target DO NOT ERASE that field. And see if it looks like what I have above. You want to make sure this part is in there-
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe -Xmx1200m -jar or something similar to how your system is set up

Sorry I just reread your post.If its not finding the Oblivion install that could be a slew of reasons.I have Windows 7 and the only problem i ran into was erasing the Target feild.I think it gave me the same message so try that,if not I'm not sure whats causing it.Is Oblivion patched to the latest? Is it D2D?Is it the Steam version? These may be why it s not finding the Oblivion install.MAYBE....don't quote me,my initial problem with Gecko was a simple fix of making sure to write the target line right,so if its not that I can't answer you.

Windows 7 64 Bit Users having problem with tes4gecko here is solution

I was having the same problem with tes4gecko not finding Oblivion Directory under Windows 7 64bit..

The problem comes from If you Install the 64 Bit Version of Java has tes4gecko is broken from my testing with 64 bit verson of Java once again.

You have to install the 32 Bit Version of Java . Then tes4gecko work fine and

you do not even have to alter the shortcut you can launch directly from the jar itself

Just thought I would post my findings..
