i have a i7 870 @ 2.93 no overclocking
8gb vengance ram
saphire 6850 graphics card
GA-H55M-S2V gigabyte motherboard

i was wondering how i enable the turbo boost and what it actually does
i also am a bit worried as my cpu warning sound came on at 80 c with about 5 mins in crysis
i have a areo cool VS-400 do i need better cooling or can this be expected ?

Are you using a stock cooler? though even with a stock one it shouldn't get that high.

Maybe a reseat of the cpu cooler?

If your room tempature is normal - like 75 degrees F then what you are seeing is way high.

Right now im at 33C. I do have a liquid cooler however I just built this 2 weeks ago and before the liquid cooler I was in the 40s with the stock fan.

I would recommend taking off the heat sink, reapply thermal paste and re-set the unit. Something is off. Make sure you have it on right, and that its not resting on something near by that could be holding the heat sink away from the proc.

You should be about 45C or lower at normal usage I think. Even at full load for me right now I dont get into the 50Cs.

Yes I have a different proc but they dont run that differently.

Turbo allows certain cores of your CPU to overclock themselfs to a certain point once the CPU is stressed enough.
Usually what people do is DISABLE turbo and just overclock the whole CPU (which is exactly what I did and almost every overclocker does).

And just to answer your question, you enable it in BIOS.
