Need a new PSU ASAP...

Post » Tue Dec 28, 2010 12:37 pm

Well I was planning on upgrading soon anyway... My power supply just fried, not as in it just stopped working fried, but as in it went all Tesla coil sound on me fried. :(

Point is I now need a new power supply, and a good one at that. Minimum of 1000W, more if possible. I'd prefer it to not cost too much, but I'd rather pay for quality than have one fry on me again...

Oh, and I'm going to be ordering one soon, probably tonight, so spit spot! I'd rather not be confined to my laptop... :(

Thanks...

Do you want modular cabling or not?
Do you want single rail voltage or not?

ok, I think Corsair makes nice power supplies, but I am no expert.

Your going to want modular unless you have some immense case. I do mean immense. Also a 1000w? What build are you running? Just for curiosities sake.

Don't know if any of them are any good though. My computer currently has two power supplies (and two power switches, obviously).

Good god. There's no reason for kW+ PSUs unless you're running a (big) server. I think you're trying to go way, way overkill on the PSU.

Perhaps I am overshooting a bit, basically I need something that can run big graphics cards. 700 and up should be fine, but my current one was a 1000 watt I believe. Definitely more than I needed.

It's not modular though, so you'll have alot of cables attached to it permanently, might be a little messy but shouldn't be much of a problem.

This is about as good as it gets, and 850 is enough for an overclocked CPU, and SLI GPUs.

Modular, 80+ gold, rebranded seasonic, but cheaper than the seasonic brand...

A more economic choice would be this:

Not modular, slightly less efficient, lower wattage but it will supply power to your parts, and do it well.

It's modular and it's a bit more efficient, worth the extra $60? Not to me, but that's for you to decide.

It would help if you told us your computer parts, you might not even need 850 watts. I made the same mistake of getting a larger power supply then necessary, don't make the same mistake. It led to heating issues. First of all because it was a more powerful PSU, and because it wasn't modular. The cables blocked the airflow, it was just a solid chunk of cables blocking my bottom fan. The one that cooled the power supply.

With a modular supply you plug in only the cables you need. So it can save you some clutter, saved me tons. Though my case isn't all that spacious in the bottom, which is consequently where most of the stuff went. -_-

Well I know I at least need a 700w supply, but it is nice to have some wiggle room. I'm fairly certain that my parts didn't even come close to matching that.

I'll take a look at my parts list tomorrow, but assuming all works out I'll be getting the CORSAIR 850w.

Well I just took a look at my parts and I honestly can't find how much power they take...
