I'm not a pro, but I would recommend a custom class. One that uses at least some magic. You will want to get friendly with the mage's guild at least, and having some magic schools as your skill picks will help with that. Also, magic seems to be a little too useful in this game. You can do more with one school of magic than you can with the various respective skills taken seperately. For example, why take swimming AND climbing when you can just take thaumaturgy and get the benefits of those two (water walk for water and levitate for high places) and more? You are probably going to want recall if you plan on doing dungeons a lot.

Ranged weapons might also be a good idea, because you can combine ranged attacks with ranged spells. I wouldn't recommend any of the languages as skill picks. I'm told that backstabbing can combine with ranged attacks (correct?). If true, it makes it easier to use, since you can remain relatively far away without being detected and shoot.

For getting through the huge dungeons, many people will tell you to follow the right/left wall. That works. Eventually. When in doubt, recall out.

Did you remap your controls? The mouse buttons don't always remap gracefully.

As for dungeons, if you go to your map, you can click on a dungeon tile and it will flash. Then at the bottom of the screen you can click to assign a note to that tile. If at every intersection you type the direction you first entered the tile from, you can just consult your notes to find out how to get to the exit. I've found that even when I'm deep in a dungeon, that method allows me to find my way out in minutes. You just have to be diligent about marking your progress. Also, be advised that the notes disappear when you leave the dungeon, so try not to leave until you've accomplished your goal.

Skewing your attribute points at the beginning makes for a way more interesting character. It allows you to play to your strengths, which are prodigious, and challenges you to avoid situations where your equally-prodigious weaknesses come out.

the Recall spell is great for dungeon diving... the other day I spent hours combing a crazy citadel looking for mummy wrappings, and Slowfalled down a trap door shaft into an inescapable room. I tried looking for secret doors and teleports, but I was stuck. I had saved over my file when I got to the bottom because I killed a bunch of monsters and found some good loot :(. next time I jump in a hole i'll make sure there's a way back out before I save over it, heh heh heh.

Would have been great to Recall to the exit, or at least levitate back up, because I had to resort to cheatmode and I hate that. BTW cheatmode revealed there was no mummy in the dungeon anyway :/ although I was not using the latest DF patch for some reason, thats probably my bad.
