Need to reinstall, how to interfere with mods least?

Oblivion's started freezing on me after very little play time for no reason I can see. I tried disabling a few mods to narrow down the problem and then I couldn't even get into the game which I think rules out mods being the problem.

I want to try and reinstall Oblivion to see if that fixes it, but I don't want to lose my mods. I love FCOM and all the other mods I have installed and it took a lot of time to get them all on and the settings to where I want them and I don't want to mess with any of them if I can avoid it.

So what's the best way to go about reinstalling? Are there certain folders and files I should copy to another location?

Are you sure its not hardware related? You might want to test some other games out before chalking it up to Oblivion.

I know three ways.

Either manually by hand or with an installer.

If an installer then OBMM or BAIN.

If you used an installer then that could give info on how to back things up and where the info on what is installed is saved.

You could copy out the entire Oblivion directory then uninstall and reinstall if any errors at least you have the back up.

But I tend to agree with Thomas - sounds more like an install issue or mod issue.

I personally have a running install, a install that has a fcom+bettercities+qtp3 reduced+optimized meshes, +180more. I crosscheck this install over and over. It absolutely has to use very little memory (under 1.2gb of ram at once) it has to run at optimal speeds, be stutter free, crash free, everything has to be very clean. I rar up this install (with no compression so i can access fast, and also becaue lots of loose files on your windows install slows things down).

Naturally, all of this is done with bain. Anything else just hurts.

Then I always use that as a base. If something goes wrong, that's bad. I took a hit. But i revert to that.

However, since I use OBGE shaders heavily, i edit the ini files (like oblivion xp and more) etc etc, before I delete my 80gb messed-up-install I always move the obse, shaders, ini, etc etc into a new folder. Then i revert Install everything i had installed
though bain (it tells you what your past installed settings/files are/where when there is a red plus there, just install the same settings) and move the relevant ini files, delete the shader folder from the new install, put the shader folder from the old install in it's place. Etc Etc.

When I merge mods with tes4gecko, then things become far more complicated to restore, however bain remembers them before they where merged, so either i merge again. Or I just forget it and deal with less esp slots.

Some things to remember:

+ Bain Keeps It's install settings inside Drive:\oblivion mods, so you can delete your entire oblivion folder, restore the old ones, and the install settings will remain intact so long as you never deleted your oblivion mods folder.
+ Obviously, keep all your rar'ed mods inside your oblivion folder and never delete that. That's always a bad idea.
+ Make a backup of your oblivion ini sometimes, restoring to an old one is smart sometimes, othertimes it just means you lose settings you never remembered liking or needing in the first place.
+ If you do make a running install - rar file, be sure to include wrye bash included. Keep everything included.


+ And a bunch of other stuff other people can tell you.
