Need roleplaying help

Post » Tue May 04, 2010 11:15 pm

So after messing up Tobias 1.0 I decided to make a Tobias 2.0, his story is : He was raised by a argonian Shaman in the wilds till he was the age of 2, the argonian decided that he would have a better future with civilisation, the argonian left him at the care of a orc hunter and his bosmer husband who had nursed her back to health when she had been left for dead by group of Imperial guards who blamed her for all the failed crops. The two took in Tobias like if he was there own, they taught him about the many different type of plants and how to use a bow as well as all the paternal love anyone could ask for. On his 15 birthday Tobias return from his hunting trip to find all his village being burn to the ground and the Imperial guards responsible for it cutting down everyone who tried to escape, all he could do is watch his parents fight the guards but were soon overwhelmed and slain.
Will continue on 2nd post, darn ps3 text limit

Now that his background is out of the way I need some help with all the other stuff, like his skills, and birthsign.
I want to try a different sign this time around because I tend to use the same stat boosting signs more.
He is a redguard, Tobias 1.0 never went to cities, the reason I say that I messed him up is because he would loot caves and bandits causing him to grow rich fast, I did thid because I honestly have no idea how to roleplay him correctly.
As for the majors the only thing that comes to mind is marksmen and alchemy.
Do you guys have any tips on how to play 2.0 more fun and efficient?Sorry if I rambled or not made any sence im freaking sleepy

Birthsign is personal preference.

For example, my Breton Healer uses the Apprentice Birthsign for a number of reasons (Yes, I know that it's negates the Breton's strongest (IMO) point, magicka resistance, but that doesn't matter). For one, she'll need the magicka, and I didn't want to use the Atronach. Two, the Apprentice's month is Sun's Height which corresponds to July, the birth month of the IRL person I based her off. Three, you can coutner any weaknesses mid to end-game if you so wish.

That said, stat boosting birthsigns are a bit of a waste IMO, as by the time you get to the end-game it'll make no difference (unless it's the Theif which boosts luck by 10, handy if you'd like to get luck to 100). I suggest choosing one where the special effect suits your play style/interests you.

For roleplaying, I suggest putting three easily controllable skills that you use in his Majors, and filling the rest of the spots with skills you won't use. That way you won't increase past level 25/30 (at level 30 you can obtain everything in the game IIRC), and you can use your skills as much as you want.
Alchemy might be a bit of a no-no in majors as it levels so fast. But if you use it normally/sparingly, you'll be fine.

Maybe, make him a sneaky character? Light armour, marksman, sneak (NOT IN MAJORS, levels too fast for my liking) and alchemy.. Then the rest is up to you.

As for the roleplay, let Tobias talk to you. Give him the bare bones of a personality, and in time he'll tell you more and more about himself. It's a hard concept to get your head around, but try it, and if you get stuck, we'll always be happy to help.

Tl:dr? I apologise.

Also, the above is all my own opinions. Feel free to take as much or as little as you want from that :)

I also can only give a little advice because as count lauriel posted Role really comes down with what feels right to you.
As he is either an extention of you or taking you on a ride, he sounds pretty cursed with mixed blessings, the signs most common with that style are imo..
Atronach, thief, apprentice or the serpent, as each has its own little succede to fail / power at a price story with it.

More fun, plain and simple look at some of Acadian's, Ramara's, Bobg's and other people who live the role postings on things they play and do in game along with character quirks..

I am not talking about no FT, game mechanics or how to make oblivion more real to life, the important fun stuff is how they react to ingame momments imo.

Skills roleplay wise, take an Argonians Athletics, blade, and alchemy, add in block, blunt and heavy armour of an orc, Bosmers Marksman and alchemy, and sneak ( woodscraft / hunter skill replacement .
Then take into acount a redguards talents for Blade / blunt, heavy armour and athletics ...
You get more or less Blade / blunt, athletics, alchemy, marksman, heavy armour, block and sneak.
Thats as best a build for roleplay I can give you, in game you may hate it, and others here are far better than I when it comes to strong game builds.

I can't add anything to excellent advice you have already received but:

...a orc hunter and his bosmer husband...

How very modern of you :)

Thank you all so much, this really helped me,
Count Lauriel, When you said to talk with Tobias my first thought was, well thats never going to happen, but today when I was in the library waiting for my next class, I think that in a way I did it, I kmow it probably sounds crazy but from what he told me, he feels helpless, he loved his parents very much. and when he lost them it was like his world collapsed around him. He has a deep hatred for Imperial and guards and he will not hesitate to kill them he thinks he could one shot kill them.

Madocmayhem, Im thinking of making him serpent, im not good with builds either. But I do want to efficient level him so that way he will last a long time, First time that im going to do it!

wetblanket, What part? the fact that there a orc and a bosmer, or the fact that they were both male?

Bam! You're there. That's perfect. His personality will develop more and more as you play the game, but you're well on your way.
Many people think that what we're talking about is "lame" as "it's just a character in a game". For me, this isn't so. Yes, it's a character in a game. But it's a character you created from the ground up, a character who's life you control, who's life you live. They're bound to have personalities.

Agreed 100% here.

Serpents fair it may help sometimes, but apart from the magic signs most BS' in vanilla are just for flavour, has he a back story for it?
Never tried efficient either, as the characters tend to just develope the skills they were born with, good luck though and have fun.

Count Lauriel, I agree with you, we see these characters through think and thin, watch them grow, Now I am happy to actually hear my character instead of making him walk through a pre determined path.
and what did you mean about tl:dr? I know hat it means but im not sure if you ment my post or yours.

Madocmayhem, the argonian shaman found his mother half dead in the forest, when she gave birth a week later the Serpent was brighter than it ever was, his Mother died shortly after. Everything that the argonian knew about his parentage was written down and placed in a locket that he treasures along with his parents wedding rings.

So this character is rebounding from catastrophes with a certain sense of justice. He apparently has a powerful capacity for both love and hate. If I had to choose a birthsign to symbolize those things, it would be the lord or lady, not the serpent.

Well you do have a point there, I chose Serpent because of the description,
Those born under this sign are the most blessed and the most cursed

The lady also has a description that matches Tobias but not as much.
Those born under the sign of the Lady are kind and tolerant.

I just saw the lover one,
Those born under the sign of the Lover are graceful and passionate.
The lord one just said Those born under the sign of the Lord are stronger and healthier than those born under other signs.

Hmmm perhaps I will change him to lady or lover
