Need to sleep on level

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:54 am

I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't make a return in Skyrim. One of the only reasons it was implemented in previous entries was because it allowed the player to maximize their potential attribute gain at level up time. If the character hadn't leveled their skills correctly, they wouldn't be able to gain the full 5 points for the corresponding attribute. Now that it has changed to a choice of health, magicka and stamina (and the likely removal of attributes), I believe the sleeping level up system will be put to rest (no pun intended).

You don't want to be 'forced' to sleep? priceless. What's the difference for you between you character sleeping and not sleeping? You said that you didn't roleplay at all, so what's the big deal? is that if you reach level 50 your character will be 50 hours older? maybe that you want to be able to level up in the middle of a fight? your foes can't do this, why should you?

About making sense. In RL you need to sleep in order to 'store' what you have learned.

To say the truth, I wouldn't mind if they take out the need to sleep to level up, as far they didn't take out sleeping and let you delay your level up in other way.

But I really think what the game need is an option when you sleep to level up or not.

I like the sleeping thing. I think it would be kind of lame to just level up whenever. It's like after you work out really hard and feel exhausted, you usually don't really feel refreshed until you wake up after some sleep.

You usually don't feel refreshed after an hour of sleep.
I didn't like sleeping to level. It was really annoying and could sometimes take a lot of time. So many times I've run all the way to a fort waaaaay out there for a quest, when my athletics causes me to level up. Then have to fast travel back, hunt down a bed, sleep for an hour, level, then fast travel all the way back to the fort.
If I could have leveled up on the spot, I could have spent a little more time playing and enjoying the game.
I'm glad I'm not on of those people who refuses to fast travel, otherwise I'd lose so many hours just to level up. Time that could be spent, well, raising skills so I could level up.

P.S. It's really late and I have a bad cold, so sorry if that doesn't make sense or if it sounds mean or just plain stupid.

I agree it was a system that didn't make sense I would honestly be happy to see this go.

How about you add a button to the wait menu that says "Wait and Level Up" and add a button to the Sleep menu that says "Sleep and Level Up"? That way everyone is happy. Krymzom74 is happy because he can level up in a dungeon (provided there are no enemies around), everyone who doesn't want an instant level up is happy because there isn't one, Xarnac is happy because he can sleep without leveling up, and people who like the sleep level up mechanic are happy because it is still there. Everyone wins.

What if I want to play a character who suffers from insomnia?

Even insomniacs collapse from exhaustion after a while.

Yes, in Oblivion you must find a place to sleep to level up so as it stands now my character is forced to sleep. What's the difference? When my character sleeps I'm watching a loading screen, when my character's awake I'm playing the game again. I don't want the ability to level mid-fight, but out of combat I see no reason why I should have to track down a bed.

Real life doesn't enter into it, we're talking about a video game character here. This character has no need to sleep, breathe, drink, eat, etc unless the devs code it in. I already watch enough of the "Waiting" screen when waiting for shopkeepers to open their shops, quest npcs to show up, and the ever present "Loading" screen whenever entering/leaving an area. I'm not a roleplayer, I could care less what my character thinks, feels, how hungry or tired they might be etc. Being able to level without the inconvenience of finding a room (another annoying form of waiting) is all I'm suggesting. Like I said above, the way Morrowind did it would make me happy. Sure I'd still have to stop n sleep for an hour (I'd still prefer none but if I can get this I'll take it!) but I get my instant gratification and the role players get their RP.

Just let you sleep anywhere no enemies are around. This works for me primarily because in games where you level up in the middle of combat or exploration I always pump the stats that I need RIGHT THEN and it ends all mish-mashy. Since sleep lets me recover my stamina, health, and magic I don't have any need for gut decisions and can plan my character more clearly.

Um... you wouldn't be able to have a level cap if you couldn't sleep. So be thankful for sleeping?

Anyway OP, I don't see what the big deal is. :/

Ummm....what? That makes no sense. What does the level cap have to do with sleeping or leveling up some other way?

How about you add a button to the wait menu that says "Wait and Level Up" and add a button to the Sleep menu that says "Sleep and Level Up"? That way everyone is happy. I don't think the 'sleep' mechanic is there just for making sure there are no enemies around or enforcing a bit of RP. You notice how the game loads when you sleep? Well it stands to reason that when you level that loading flips the switch for the world to level up. Remember, this is TES, and the world is level-scaled to you. So if you leveled in the wild or a dungeon (without the division of a loading screen) then- at least until you hit a load screen- you would be leveled above everything else. The enemies and loot would still be on the lower level.

Also I think they took out the 'rest/level anywhere' because waking up to a natch hound or cliff racer really svcked.

Something like this is best. Ideally though I'd want a way to set up a 'camp' in the wild so I could rest/level (rather than a wait/level anywhere option). But still no leveling in Dungeons. At least not if loot is still scaled to level.

So what I really want is a system where you can only level (via resting/waiting) in a 'safe' area- a city, village, house, or campsite (which you can set up). But I would be willing to go for a system with the 'Level Up option' added to the Wait and Rest menus.

I'm all for the sleep requirement, and I'd even want it to be more substantial. When leveling you pick a perk, something new to do. These new abilities shouldn't just dawn on you by taking a nap for an hour, you should study them for a week or so. Or maybe slow down over time as leveling up gets less and less frequent, dunno.

In game, it doesn't mean anything else than having to rent a room for longer time if resting at an inn, but you could also rest in a dungeon, a camp, or make your own camp. The transition could even be instant, without having to watch an hour/day counter. Interface means less, the point is it drives time forward.

It's not for wanting to be a jerk about it :) But because it can serve as a golden opportunity to drive time forward, while at the same time feel natural. I want seasons (even if only for change in lighting) and holidays, but if the game is "completely done" within a couple of months time (like Oblivion), there is no point in having it in.

Well, they could make it so that every play through starts at a randomly picked time of year. Or even have the player choose it. At least then there'd be more use out of changing seasons.

Usually when someone comes with a solution for everyone, everyone is displeased. This is not the case. good thinking.

So, you wan't to be able to levelup everywhere, without waiting? I think Omicron Zero has a good point about why this is at least complicated.
Real life doesn't enter into it, we're talking about a video game character here.
oh! Sorry, this part wasn't directed to you. Someone has stated that needing to sleep to level up makes no sense.
This character has no need to sleep
yes, it does. this is preciselly what you are complaining about.

I suppose the reason for not using the Morrowind system, has something to do with what Omicron has stated.

The need to sleep seems perfectly sensible to me. The comments at the top of the level up screen illustrate that a level transition is a period, however brief, of reflection.
I don't like it when you are wandering around, hit one enemy, and suddenly you have learned a new skill and become faster/stronger/more learned. The need to sleep represents in a shortened, abstract way, the training, reading and practicing that levelling up implies.

Well I think it's lame to have to find a bed every time I level. Simply put from my point of view it's the game devs wasting my time.

I may indeed need a nap after a workout. However we're talking about a character in a video game. If my character runs from Anvil to Chorrol they don't need a nap, why would they need one when it's time to level? Making said character sleep to level is imposing a small bit of roleplay on the character. Roleplayers like it, I understand that. Roleplay to your heart's content, I don't care. I'm just saying in a game where you're supposed to "learn by doing" having to sleep when you're ready to level seems completely backwards.

I play TES for the exploration and combat, could care less about RP. I'm just asking for a system that doesn't get in my way and force me to do things I really don't want to do every couple hours. Would love to play without sleeping or waiting for once...

TES has always been about immersion first and foremost. I don't think devs are going to sacrifice any of that for someone who thinks it's "lame" and just wants to power game.

I like having the need to sleep for level ups. It adds to the atmosphere, and makes buying a house more useful.

So let's say I'm out in the middle of nowhere Cyrodil fighting whatever comes along and collecting alchemy ingredients. Suddenly I have what's required to level. Now I have to drop what I'm doing to go back to town to level up completely killing the immersion in what I was just doing. So what was your point again?

Nothing is forcing me to do it zomgritenow! but on the other hand, why make me wait till I've traveled back to town and found a room?

My motivation for leveling almost immediately is wanting the leveled lists to change. Monsters, loot, etc. A lot changes when you level. I like the high end content and I speed my characters towards it. Fighting wild animals holds no appeal to me, while fighting a Daedra does. In Oblivion it was more levels for better loot and monsters. In Morrowind it was so more Golden Saints and Dremora Lords would appear.

There needs to be more use for beds than simply sleeping in them for leveling. If they however make sleeping necessary to level up it will again allow you to be a level 1 char with 100 in every skill, however now with the downside of having no perks at all or the HP/mana/stamina to win enemies from the higher leveled areas. I don't actually care, as long as beds serve another purpose than leveling too.

If I would like to cap at a certain level period, I don't wanna have to level up further by sleeping in case there will be a hardcoe mode. There should be other ways of leveling up.

At one point I was more or less desperate for a mod for Oblivion that would disable leveling up upon sleeping, there wasn't much other than Wrye Leveling.
