Need to sleep on level

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:20 am

With the ability to set up camps, this wouldn't really be an issue. Todd specificaly said he liked the bedroll mod, so there's a chance we'll have the ability to set up camp sites. Here's hoping for that. Anyway, if you can set up a bedroll in the woods sleeping to level up is fine. Though, sleeping in a real bed should add a little xp % gain to give nice beds a real perpose.

you should get a tent and bed roll in your inventory that someone in the main quest gives you and they should take out the waiting function because seriously who in their right mind would stand still for hours on end. So to make it possible to wait when in a town you must sleep till the wanted time when out in the wilderness you set up camp. and the sleeping to level thing is perfect it gives you the feel of you have wasted energy to increase your skills and exhausted yourself and for those benfits to take place you must sleep to wake up and feel rejuvenated and refreshed ready for another fight

Personally, I think you should level up immediately whatever the situation. Sleeping should be a daily requirement (like eating), otherwise your main stats should be effected.

*ahem* 1. The TES Series are RPGs. 2. In Oblivion it says "You should go find a bed and meditate on what you've learned" 3. You gain a level uup for raising your major/minor skills. 4. Pie.

So let's say I'm out in the middle of nowhere Cyrodil fighting whatever comes along and collecting alchemy ingredients. Suddenly I have what's required to level. Now I have to drop what I'm doing to go back to town to level up completely killing the immersion in what I was just doing. So what was your point again?

I sigged your rig.... Well a part of it

I think we should have to sleep to level up. Maybe wait, but no instant level up thing. Notice the message that pops up says: "Your ____ skill increased, you should REST and meditate on what you have learned." <~ Might not be word for word, but something like that.

.. same way as in Fallout... you reach the level, as long as you are not taking damage, or enemies are near you, poof, level-up menu.

Agreed. :)

With Skyrim my hope is renewed that we'll just be able to level whenever we wish, wherever we are, at any time we'd like.

Granted.

... but now you must sleep at least 8 hours every game day or else your character loses all of their fatigue and is unable to fight or run.

It doesn't matter to me which option they choose but I'm thinking it'll be auto level. The reason being that Attributes probably won't be as important this time around, and with the greater focus on Skills and raising either Health, Magicka, or Stamina, sleeping isn't as necessary to level this time.

However that doesn't mean that Sleeping isn't important because I'm hoping that they get rid of the wait one hour your health is auto restored trick and do what they did with Fallout 3 where you have to Sleep, or use items to recover your health. Restoration will be an added tool to that equation but I'm hoping the one hour trick is gone like it was in Fallout 3.

Making said character sleep to level is imposing a small bit of roleplay on the character. Roleplayers like it, I understand that. Roleplay to your heart's content, I don't care. I'm just saying in a game where you're supposed to "learn by doing" having to sleep when you're ready to level seems completely backwards.

I play TES for the exploration and combat, could care less about RP. I'm just asking for a system that doesn't get in my way and force me to do things I really don't want to do every couple hours. Would love to play without sleeping or waiting for once...

Then might I suggest you don't play a RPG if you don't want to have 'a small bit' of roleplay. Perhaps Just Cause 2 will be better for your combat/exploration needs.

As for me.
1. Remove the level up indicator.
2. Have the day's fatigue cause me to need to sleep.
3. Give me a suprise when I wake if I can level.

(hardcoe
4. Cause my skills not to raise after the 4th or 5th day of no sleeping.
At that point I'll be a walking zombie fighting without technique, and couln't remember my name let alone any skills I learned.)

Eh, I'll be honest that I'm more partial to these than what we currently have. And a big nooonono to what the OP wants. No offense, but frankly just no way jose; and seeing from your post on what's being the reason for you to want it to be gone altogether, I think the actual problem lies on the less-than good implementations of level-scaling in those two games, which itself is not a feature that should be removed completely but can be done better while keeping in mind to not encouraging the players for any sort of power-gaming, in my opinion.

No.
This is an RPG, not a hack n slash.
The more core RPG elements are removed, the more hack n slash it will be.
A trend I abhorred about Oblivion and certainly do not wish to see expanded on in Skyrim.
Keep sleeping for levelling, resting for restoring health and magicka.

I like the sleep before leveling. I like the whole idea of 'meditating on what you've learnt', I always imagine my character has a bit of quite time before sleeping to reflect on his recent achievments and failures, and takes time to work out where he needs to improve. Then once waking it's like he's hit with a revelation and gains further insight on how to get better.

This is actually a good idea. I like it.

But whatever the final thing will be like, I wish you would have to go to sleep. Oblivion handled it well.

In Oblivion, there were too many benefits to remaining low level. I also hated that if I snuck around too much, I might be level 15 but with no combat skills, just a really, really high sneak. I eventually modded Oblivion to a mod called Oblivion XP.

I wish TES were like this mod. You gain exp for performing actions like sneaking by someone successfully, stealing items, and killing things, and then when you gain enough exp, you level up. To level, you open up a menu, and allot your points where you want them to go -- the game doesn't decide for you. Is it TES style? No. It's a more traditional RPG leveling system, and I like it.

 I'm sure you guys will disagree, though.

You usually don't feel refreshed after an hour of sleep.

Maybe you don't, but I do. That's why people take naps. A lot of times I feel more refreshed after a one hour nap in the middle of the day than an 8 hour nap through the night.

Even if you don't make your character sleep at night, regardless, at the end of the day, it's a roleplaying game. The tools to roleplay are there, and whether or not you use them to that end is up to the player. Roleplaying requires the players' cooperation.

I like sleeping to lvl up. You need time to reflect on what you've learnt, and it also gives a necessary and practical use for beds. Also it forces a few autosaves into an open world game...

eeehh..thats a hard decision. it kidna beats the point of sneaking for experience. i think that u shuld earn a certain amount of xp and alot them to w/e u did to earn them. but u dont have to put it all down at once. if u earn 20 points of sneak u can add 3 if uwant to and not level up. ur thinking of the same system as fallout.

I wouldn't mind leveling up while awake, but it seems kind of awkward for the game to pause in the middle of combat to ask what new abilities you would like.

I don't get how some people find it difficult to understand how leveling up without sleeping would work. Fallout just paused the game when any danger had passed, allowing you to level up on the spot. Not that I'm siding with the non sleepers here. Elder Scrolls has always implemented the sleeping and leveling menu. It just works. I hope they keep it.

dunno it never bothered me

I like that little bit of immersion. I'd be happy if they added a bedroll you could carry around to sleep in the "wilds" (yes I know all the various places you could find what would qualify as a 'bed' weren't really very hard to find, but still some of us like the illusion of being in the true wilds.)

I love the leveling on sleep, it makes me feel like I've made progress more. Gives me a better sense of progression.
