Need to sleep on level

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:30 pm

Since I've been playing TES series there's something that has bugged me. The need to sleep to level up.

With Skyrim my hope is renewed that we'll just be able to level whenever we wish, wherever we are, at any time we'd like.

So what do you all think?

Will you again be waist deep in a dungeon and ready to level yet unable to do so because there are enemies nearby or you're not near a bed? As if after an hour nap my character is going to suddenly have new abilities and more health when they wake up... I thought you were supposed to learn by doing instead of sleeping in TES games?

IMO this tired old system needs to go. Just let me level up whenever I want.

It was never much of a hassle to get to a bed. Plus wherever skills you level up still count towards your next level.

I like the sleeping thing. I think it would be kind of lame to just level up whenever. It's like after you work out really hard and feel exhausted, you usually don't really feel refreshed until you wake up after some sleep.

What if I want to play a character who suffers from insomnia?

If it's beneficial to level up past a certain level then yes have it be automatic. If this was Oblivion I would say Heck no keep the sleep for level up but Skyrim will be different then Oblivion.

I didnt like this either in Oblivion, since I gave myself a level cap and I couldn't sleep after I hit it.

I don't really like becoming superman instantly, I think it'd happen over time.

Easy, just open your menu. Game auto-pauses when you do this, it always has. Pick your perk/health/etc. Leave menu. Pretty simple.

Then don't sleep and don't level up. Makes perfect sense. People with insomnia typically don't get that feeling of being refreshed.

This was one feature that really impressed me. I liked it. This mechanic gently enforced plausible roleplaying with an outside [mechanical] purpose. Its something that I would like to see return in TES, but.... Given the setting, it would be nice if they work out a means of setting camp for the night, as the PC will (presumably) not always have access to an inn.

.. same way as in Fallout... you reach the level, as long as you are not taking damage, or enemies are near you, poof, level-up menu.

in all srsness, this is a rpg, not some fallout game, it has to make sense how you level up, go to bed, MEDITATE ON IT!

That's why they need the Daggerfall resting system back. No bed needed. The main reason to require rest to level is to assure that you don't level up during combat to disrupt things. I'd say fast traveling should also force you to level up, and daily fatigue needs to be reimplemented so you can't go days without resting.

This. Also, I like levelling up a lot but not sleeping so much, so I face better leveled enemies, and can always know I have an extra level 'stocked up' if I need it.

Well I think it's lame to have to find a bed every time I level. Simply put from my point of view it's the game devs wasting my time.

I may indeed need a nap after a workout. However we're talking about a character in a video game. If my character runs from Anvil to Chorrol they don't need a nap, why would they need one when it's time to level? Making said character sleep to level is imposing a small bit of roleplay on the character. Roleplayers like it, I understand that. Roleplay to your heart's content, I don't care. I'm just saying in a game where you're supposed to "learn by doing" having to sleep when you're ready to level seems completely backwards.

I play TES for the exploration and combat, could care less about RP. I'm just asking for a system that doesn't get in my way and force me to do things I really don't want to do every couple hours. Would love to play without sleeping or waiting for once...

Um... you wouldn't be able to have a level cap if you couldn't sleep. So be thankful for sleeping?

Anyway OP, I don't see what the big deal is. :/

It's funny that your character is so picky that he has to sleep in a bed and not on the ground.

Agreed. In Morrowind I could rest/sleep wherever I wanted and level as long as there were no enemies around. If they bring this back I'll be one happy camper.

I always liked that we have to sleep to lvl up. I don't know why, but I like it much more than the auto-level-up system normally found in games.

The only time I had an issue with this is when I would level up somewhere at the bottom of a dungeon with no beds in sight. Sure, any further leveling would count towards my next one, but it was still mildly annoying that I couldn't take advantage of my new level without dropping what I was doing, leaving the dungeon, and finding a bed somewhere, only to come back to the dungeon afterwards to finish it up.
