I need some mods that GREATLY increases the FPS

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:32 am

As you may or may not know, I have a pretty low-end computer, enough that I have to set the settings to very low in Oblivion, and even then, my frame rates will drop to around 10 in some places. I will need all the mods that will increase my fps, even by a little, that's not outdated either. No Flickering Light was a god send. That's the only mod that I've used where it noticeably increased the FPS.

Here's a list of my mods in case you guys have suggestions on what to remove that causes lag. Please tell me which mods causes me lag, even if by a smedge. And I disabled Harvest Containers because I thought with all the added animations on containers, it might have added in some lag as well.

You are running all that on a low end computer?

That was your first mistake.

I think I have, I have to check again. I thought some of the stuff there was outdated, so I wasn't sure if I wanted to use them.

Well, I just visited the site, and I thought it would have been a list of mods that increases performance. What does this mod do?

Yes... I know. I told myself I wasn't gonna use a lot of mods, but when I download one mod, I'll start downloading another and another. It's just like opening a can of Pringles.

Then what you need is to trim down your mods, not add too them.

OldBlivion is meant to allow for pre-DirectX 9 cards to run Oblivion. It is not designed to be used for performance increases, rather it allows you to play Oblivion on GPUs that do not support DirectX 9 (9 was fairly new at the time).

OldBlivion will not help you squeeze any extra frames out of the game. If your card supports DirectX 9, you have no use for it.

What is really happening here is as Echo said, you are pushing Oblivion farther than your system can handle with all those mods. You will not alleviate this by adding even more mods, you have to remove some.

I don't know what to remove though. Should I remove some of my dungeon mods and weapon/armor mods?

Do you have any texture packs installed? Those would certainly drain performance. Have you used the LAA Patcher? Or OSR with another mod that provides purging (like streamline)?

Huh? LAA Patcher? I don't know what that is. I don't think I have any texture packs installed. The only one that comes close to a texture package that I can think of at the moment is this mod that makes the faces look better. Doesn't change their hairs or reshapes their faces in any way, just makes their mouths better and stuff and gets rid of some spots on their faces that I noticed in lite brite mode.

I also just got rid of All Natural weather and a few other things.

Here's my load order now.

What do you guys think of Real Swords? I have all the packs. I also have Artifacts, Lost Paladins of the Divine, Unique Signs, and Armamen Complete which by itself is 146mb big.

Do any of these drain my performance?

And I also added a bunch of dungeon mods, mostly from David Brasher. I don't know how much dungeon mods can slow down your game, but I usually judge by how big the file is, like a 600kb mod that adds a bunch of dungeons around won't have any effect as opposed to a 33mb gigantic dungeon.

Have you looked over http://tescosi.com/wiki/Oblivion/Stabilization_and_Optimization?

I'm reading it and I'm looking at the page that provides performance enhancing mods. I'm confused about QTP3 Reduced. Will it improve my FPS, or is it just an alternative to his regular texture pack for lower end machines that still eats up FPS?

Duke Patrick's Near Miss Magick and Arrows doesn't provide any loss in performance does it?

Generally speaking, the first FPS bottleneck is AI and the second one is polygons. If your mods don't add extra NPCs/creatures, and don't add high-detail landscaping (or extremely detailed weapons and armor that EVERYONE is wearing), then they're probably OK. What's your FPS with just Oblivion.esm?

I have no idea what my usual FPS with regular Oblivion, but it was pretty smooth. I mean, it still got laggy in some places like interiors, and actually even more laggy without the no flickering lights tweak.

Now Real Swords does add weapons and armors to NPCs, along with Armen Complete I think, but I guess they're not highly detailed like Frostmorne by Jojo, which alone will drop my FPS significantly if it's in my view.

Even though this is the mod forum, getting your computer's specs might be helpful for more specific advice.

What kind of poor performance are you getting?
-Is the framerate consistently below 24 fps? Activating the console and typing in "tdt" will toggle an fps counter.
This probably means that your cpu just isn't up to the task. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12331 can help a lot, since processing footsteps in Oblivion can put a pretty heavy load on older processors. The http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html is a comprehensive guide to optimizing your installation of windows, and reducing the impact of background programs. There is a lot to read there, but if you go through the relevant parts, you will have a better running, stable computer for just about everything.

-Do you encounter bad loading jags whenever you enter a new cell?
This indicates that the problem is a memory issue. You may want to take another look at what mods are adding high resolution textures. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10400 can automatically purge unnecessary data in your memory, and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24606 will keep your save game size down. There are also some .ini tweaks that can be done, but it's much more effective to follow the instructions in Streamline's readme.

Or does the game slow down the most in battle?
-The AI is probably bogging your computer down. Streamline's streamsmooth feature is a lifesaver for this. It takes some configuring to get it working smoothly, but it will automatically reduce the game's settings when in combat, letting you enjoy a smooth fps when you need it. I believe there are also mods out there that reduce the number of creatures that spawn.

Read through http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html. It has some good suggestions for .ini tweaks, but make sure they aren't already being changed by something else like streamline.

-Does the game always slow down after 10/20/30 minutes?
Have you dusted your pc recently? Is your laptop cool to the touch? If you answered no to either of these questions, you might just have an over-heating problem. An overheating computer will often throttle itself. Dust it with some canned air and make sure it is in an open, well ventilated space.

Edit: Redimized QTP3 is still larger and more demanding than the vanilla textures.
2nd Edit: The tweak guide I linked is free if you just hit the download button, but if you find it useful, 4.50 is an awesome deal for something that would cost 10x that in a book store.

I do have quiet feet installed actually. I don't hear any feet noise from creatures. And a good FPS rate for me would be around 25. It drops around 12 in some places. It's kind of hard to tell what brings it down, but I suspect the main culprit is the lights and NPCs. The game usually performs better exterior than in interiors.

Here's my dxdiag file.

Lower fps in interiors is actually pretty unusual. That and the fact that your memory usage seems decent makes me wonder if it is a driver issue with your graphics card. I'm not up to date on nvidia drivers, but you might want to experiment with newer/older graphics drivers to see if that makes a difference.

The Tweakguide has a lot of suggestions for lighting issues here: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_8.html
Use with caution, as .ini changes can make your game crash or look like absolute crap.

A good way to get some extra use out of your gpu is to use Poor Man's Anti-aliasing. Make sure anti-aliasing is turned off in-game and in the nvidia control panel on your desktop. Then reduce the in-game resolution. Going below your notebook's standard 1440 x 900 resolution will give everything slightly fuzzy soft edges, sort of like anti-aliasing! It goes without saying that HDR and Bloom should be turned off as well.

Unrelated bad news: HP/Compaq actually lost a class action law suit a couple years ago because of problems with your series of video cards. They will literally fry themselves to death. :sadvaultboy: So watch out for that. On the plus side, I think they also extended the manufacturer warranty, which is worth looking into.

Edit: sorry for de-railing a mod thread. Apart from removing all-natural weather and maybe real swords I can't see anything that would make a big difference, although there is no doubt that the sheer number of mods installed does slow the game down.

Oh trust me. you didn't derail anything. This is all helpful. I always turn anti-aliasing off on all my games, I never leave it off, and my resolution for Oblivion is at the lowest setting you can put it on, which is 600x something.

Sogar - A few console commands will help in figuring out if a mod you have just added to your load order have any detrimental effects too (aswell as the feel of the game)

From http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:SetDebugText you will find a list of useful commands ...

For instance if you want to know how much Graphics memory you are currently using, and your FPS, use the tilde key ` (above tab on my keyboard) to enter the console and type ...

setdebugtext 13

then type ...

tdt

then press the tilde key again to come out of the console. http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=4274679ScreenShot72.jpg

To turn it off, enter console, tdt, exit console.

Check how much graphics memory your video card has, 256 / 512 mb etc, if the total graphics memory used is exceeding this then you are using too much from one/or a few of the mods you have installed.

Thanks! I didn't know about that. I was using TDT in the console though to show my FPS, but I never typed in setdebugtext.

That's a pretty hefty load order anyway, especially for a low end PC.

Oblviion's engine is old, it's badly optimised and temperamental at best. Even super high end PCs still drop to 20fps on a modded install in some areas, the engine is just poor at optimisation, especially when AI and NPCs are involved. If you get decent FPS with vanilla Oblivion, then you know what my recommendation is going to be. Backup your saves and your mod list (or your whole Oblivion data folder if you have the space), and uninstall the game. Re-install it, and run it on vanilla. Check everythings smooth and okay. Add a few mods, see if the performance is still decent. If it is, feel free to add a few more, and so on.

This is really the only decent way to do it. But bear in mind, even with the best PC in the world, some areas will lag more than others (the waterfront is infamous for FPS issues for example).

Couldn't I just uninstall my mods one by one? That's what I'm trying to do. My mods are mostly made up of mods that add in weapons and armors.

Active Mod Files:
Spoiler
05 No Lights Flicker.esm [CRC: 29C4F46C]
++ UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp [Version 1.0.0] [CRC: A2DBC5A4]
48 UFF & RM Assassin Elite Armor.esp [CRC: 2715BED5]

Here's a few you can remove,

No Lights Flicker - Use the Wrye Bash tweak instead
UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp - As above Wrye Bash equivalent tweak does the same as this esp (this esp is installed as part of the UOP, UOP you still need obviously, but this extra esp is now redundant)

I notice also you have a Real Lights dependancy - All Natural is heavy on anyone's machine if you use the Real Lights component. Most people will use real lights at the expense of a few FPS, but in your case I would suggest its a heavy hitter. The rest of All Natural can be used ofc.

You have an awful lot of armours installed too - First the one in the spoiler above; I have never used UFF but do you use that body type?, should it have its own esp?, and if you are using the Robert Male Armour (RM) you do not have any version of the RobertMale esps installed.

Will you really use all of those armours?, or are you just a natural squirrel hording armours like nuts :)

I would just go through it and think "Am I ever likely to use this mod". On my laptop I usually have between 100 - 130 mods, after Wrye Bash imports/merges and ghosting it cuts down to between 80 - 95.

Texture mem usage and also the amount of mesh models any mod introduce is then closely monitored for every mod I add (I did the BAIN for RobertMaleV5 but couldn't use it with its 2048 sized textures on my laptop with only 256mb graphics mem - Hence why I made all the reduced 1024 options so I could use it too :)). Body and Armour mods, times by the amount of NPC's wandering about wearing them if its Stock Clothing and Armour can be a surprising heavy hitter too in places.
