Need some work related advice

Post » Sun Nov 28, 2010 7:37 am

Not a huge problem, but I applied to Kroger a few weeks back, and I just got a call scheduling an interview for tomorrow. I'm pumped to finally get some work, but I'm worried. See, I said on the application that I wanted to work part time, but during these past few weeks waiting, I've decided I want to work full. There's no reason why I shouldn't, and I desperately need the money ($800 a month sounds a lot better than $400).

Basically, since my conversation skills svck like no other, I need advice on how to express to my interviewer tomorrow that I'd rather work full time. Now, if they only need me for part, then I'm screwed, at least temporarily. If that's the case, then I'll just have to come in every single chance I get and fill in for absences and such.

I know, it's a rather pathetic situation, but this is the first time I've had a chance at work in ages, and I'd hate to barely make any money after all that effort spent applying to places. Stupid me and marking part time. I should have realized at the time that I cannot pay for tech school with so little in my wallet. :shakehead:

Just tell em if theres hours available you are down to work more than part time/400/mo.

"So you know its a part time position that needs to be filled"

"Yeah, and if there are more hours you can throw my way, I'd be more than happy to work".

Either there gonna start you with not alota hours to see what your like or they'll throw the hours at you if they really need someone or have alota hours to spare

Hmm, that could work. However, I'd feel kind of stupid, since I also put on the application that my availability is 8AM to 8PM. Yet I marked part time. My application already says I could work more, but gives the impression that I do not want to.

If you have open availability tell them your available open to close and even flexible with open/close (mabey they want you earlier than open or later than close)

Make sure they dont catch you jerkin off in the break room when you could be doing something productive (Unless you are on your breaks ofc). If its a grocery/retail job, there will always be something to do.

Just say that your situation has changed, and you'd be more than happy to work any extra hours they could give you.

Hah, believe me, I've worked WalMart's third shift - plenty of experience in retail. My main concern is getting more hours than I said I wanted originally, so I'll just have to see, I guess. It could be worse; I could not have gotten an interview at all.

If you get the job, hope the Manager likes your or the guy who does the hours likes you.

Can't get a job back at that WalMart you worked at? (If its possible)

Just tell them that you are very interested in the job and that if a full time position becomes available you would be interested in that as well. Let them know that you will gladly work as much and as often as you are needed. Then if you get the job, be there, be on time and don't complain about your job. If they call you at the last minute to ask you to work, go in and work even if it means you have to leave in the middle of a moment of passion.

Nothing gets someone a full time position quicker than being a willing, able and hard working part timer. ;)

Possibly, but this was the only application I got a response from so far.

@ summer:

...You made that sound a bit romantic. Thanks, though, I'll be sure to inform them that I'm willing to bend over backwards for them, though I can't really change my 8-8 availability due to transportation issues. Any hours during that time frame are perfectly fine.

You should go talk to em, and since you've already worked there they wont need to train you, probably. This time keep it, even if its at least one day a week, if possible.

I wanted to get a p/t job at a Walmart, one day a week thing, but they dont get discounts on groceries.

From my experience in interviews, you have nothing to worry about. Somewhere along the line the interviewer will tell you the hours for the job. When he does either the job will be

1. part-time with full-time potential, in which case you agree and work your ass off to get full time hours.
2. Full-time, in which case you agree and work your ass off.
3. Is part-time and you agree because you need this job.

And should it come down to that third one, I could just apply to more places (Marking full this time) and continue working at Kroger until I'm given a better opportunity.

^This

Also, I would add that in addition to being hard working, coming across as confident and pleasant to speak with in any phone calls or personal interactions with the store manager will go a very long way.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I'll have to put on my Cloak of Charisma. The phone calls will be fine; It's the interview where I might start to stutter. Let's just hope my boss isn't like the one at WalMart who scared the living [censored] out of everybody.

Explain to them that you would like to work full time. Your situation has changed and would like to take a full time job. But if thats not possible, like said above you will work any absences or do extra work or request a transfer if full time is available.

I prefer "There's no such thing as a stupid question until you ask it." :P

But seriously, I really appreciate all the support. As always, BGSF proves how great of a community it has. My confidence has taken a turn for the better. Moreso now that I found out the drug test doesn't require me to pee in a cup. I was dreading that the most.

They will require, however, to be able to pee in your cup. Any reply other than 'Hmm, minty fresh!' is not acceptable.

Aaand I didn't get it. Inflexible availability due to this [censored] transportation issue. And just when I thought my life was finally going to take a turn for the better.

Back to being a depressing hermit.

Keep trying. If you continue to show interest, something could come up. I may have missed it, but what are the hours of the business? How bad is the transportation issue? I saw the hours for that, how bad is the conflict in times? Are there any other transport options? Sorry to ask so many questions, I'm sure you've already put thought into all of this.

I agree with this. This is perfect. Say your situation has changed now, and you are more willing to take on a full time potion now. You will still take the part time option, but if full time is avaliable, you prefer that now.

Let them know you are avaliable for any extra hours if they need be.

I believe from 6 AM to around 2 AM? The transportation issue is that I just got my learner's permit, and I won't be able to drive by myself for 6 months. Apparently, stockers at Kroger sometimes need to work to 11 PM, a time I cannot deal with at the moment. And no, there are no other options. My mother works night shift at a WalMart farther away and my sister isn't insured on the remaining vehicle.

So yeah...All I can do is apply elsewhere.
