NEEDING to use a torch or nighteye

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:09 am

I use light, at least, all the time in Oblivion; I even need it. I think it's dark enough where I can oftentimes make out general shapes in the dark, but can only really see them with illumination of some kind. It's pretty dark, for me. Does it have anything to do with one's platform/monitor/TV/brightness settings? Morrowind's dungeons are much lighter, for me, though, however I play the two games on different platforms.

I used torches a lot in PS3 Oblivion, I purposely turned down the brightness to slow down dungeon crawls. Instead of running through, killing and looting and being done, I had to meticulously slay each enemy and be sure I hadn't missed any before I pulled out a torch to search for treasure and loot the corpses, as most enemies seemed to be psychic and swarm on you immediately if you were carrying a torch.

This is so strange to me, I ALWAYS used a torch and Night-Eye in Oblivion. How could you see in caves? - it was nearly pitch black for me. Sadly, the torch presented the best natural lighting, yet it always was transient so you had to get a new one. I REALLY would like a spell that I can enchant on a piece of attire that would not make everything blue, or one that would give a greenish appearance to surfaces. Something that is close to natural or completely natural in light.

I want actual dark nights, the nights in Oblivion (and Fallout) were really... bright, and I didn't want to turn down the brightness because then the game looked weird during the daytime.

I had to use a torch/nighteye in oblivion. The forts are especially dark. I am running OOO so maybe that changed lighting.

I would miss those ayelid and normal chests all the time if I didn't use a torch or light spell. I was playing in the dark too. The caves that have weird blueish light though, those ones I never needed light.

But yes, torches should be mandatory inventory for adventurers and should be needed. I was out of torches recently and had to make some nighteye potions to find some treasure chests.

Torches certainly need to be essential to seeing in certain dungeons. I'd really also like to be able to use my torch as a pseudo-club to hit people with.

Nighteye also needs an improvement. Blue-vision was not cool. I used the console to delete that spell after the first and only time I ever cast it.

I often had to use torches in MW/OBL.

The thing that kinda svcked about that was that meant I couldn’t easily keep my shield equipped (making them irrelevant for many combat situations) and that my enemies didn’t share this problem.

As for nighteye, I just don’t want it to be blue. Black & white would be fine and a little more realistic.

Indeed. I admit, I would always just turn the brightness up on Oblivion. :P They should eliminate that option so we have to use torches/nighteye :vaultboy:

i really wish they would put a cool down period on night eye or nerf it somehow because once you get night eye torches become absolutely useless. it woudl be nice if torches or items equipped with light enchantments scared away creepy things in dark areas like bats and bugs and rats etc. that way you would have a reason to use a light source in the dungeons. if you sneak around with night eye for too long you start to get nibbled on by creepy crawlies.

as for oblivions blue vision i think they were trying ti make it uncormfortable to use so that people wouldnt abuse it. they went too far though.......i couldnt look at it for more than a few seconds. ended up using a mod to make it look fish-eyed and goofy around the edges.

Oh.. here we go again.
Someone doesnt understand how the game works and wants to 'nerf' it, because it is 'op'.
Aside from the youngspeak.. do people these days understand the concept of an RPG anymore?

The reason we have nighteye (Handy, if it doesnt make everything blue) is so we do not need torches or a light spell, yet remain undetected.

I mean, we cant fly, jump, levitate, teleport, be a breton, fortify skills, become invisible, without it being 'op'.
:banghead:

Now.. while being quite polite and understanding.. go away and go play mario cart.

If they ditch the Hollywood style lighting in the dungeons, we'll actually have a reason to use vision enhancement devices. I always played with a mod called Darker Nights and Darker Dungeons. That, along with torches that dim, are dropable while lit, and auto drop when you draw a weapon, and Oblivion suddenly had a whole other layer of immersion.

I agree. You could be in a dungeon or out late at night with no lights and it would still be plenty light to see. I too think the torch should be weaponized. A nice combo would be vial of grease or oil in one hand which you could throw or smash on someone like a blunt weapon and then stick them with the torch and light them up.

Bethesda should follow in Nehrims exaple. Torches are NEEDED, Trolls run from fire. And One more thing: Spiders will attack you like crazy if you go in blind, but will be more reluctant to do so if you have a light source emitting from you

Yes, but on ONE condition: that darkness without light affects the enemies and NPCs as much as it does you. That if they don't have any torches or spells of their own, they're just as blind and prone to error as the PC. Enemies that don't depend on their sight much (or at all), however, are exempt.

Being as I doubt Bethesda will get their AI up to this, however...

It would be cool to see a spider give out a terrible shreek when you set it on fire or set its nest on fire.

AAAGH, NO!!
I squashed a spider the other day, and it SCREAMED.
It was AWFUL. None of that, PLEASE!
although it would be pretty cool

I agree that dungeons should certainly be darker, nights too, but not as dark as dungeons, seeing as you have the moon and stars, still, nights should be dark enough that visibility would be impacted without a torch or spell, especially in areas like forests, or during certain weather conditions. But it's most important in dungeons, at this point, Darker Dungeons or a similar mod has become essential to me in Oblivion. If I'm in a dungeon, don't carry any lightsource or use any spells that help the player see in dark places, and there are no environmental light sources like torches nearby, I don't want to see ANYTHING. I want the lighting to actually be dark, like lock yourself in a room with no windows, close the door, and turn out the lights kind of dark. Not the slightly dimmer than my comfort zone level of dark that I got in Oblivion and Morrowind, at best. Torches should be mandatory, not a commodity. To go along with this, Bethesda could implement the ability to drop lit torches during combat, similar to the Oblivion mod, so that when you encounter enemies, you don't need to put your torch away, thus preventing you from seeing them, in order to fight back. The version of that mod included in OOO has saved me a lot of trouble when fighting in the now very dark dungeons of my modded Oblivion.

Well, I certainly never needed to in Morrowind or Oblivion, at most, torches and light or nighteye spells MIGHT become something that's beneficial to have, but they were never essential. Without mods, the main situation where I'd need torches was actually when looking for small objects,

If you mod oblivion torches become essential

Technically, that depends on what mods you install.
