NEEDING to use a torch or nighteye

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:55 am

Definitely. One of the mods I used on my PC version of Oblivion made the nights darker, and it really added so much to the game. As for torches as weapons, I'm optimistic this will be implemented. The dual wielding system gives you a button for each hand (that's how I understand it) so if one of those hands was holding a torch, it would make sense that pressing the corresponding button would mean using it as a weapon.

If that's a joke then what's the real answer?

actually if you went into a dark cave in skyrim without nighteye and with only one torch that burns out and you end up stuck.........tough luck. hopefully you saved before you went into the dungeon.

What ifyou also have stunted magicka and no restore magicka potions?

But what if you are dead -.-

It could have places where light come from holes, illuminating small portions of it with sun/moon light. Also things that are 1 meter away from your character could still be seen, but not in full spectre of colors, only black/brown shadowy shapes.

And all bandits and marauder dungeons should have torches on some walls, and the bandits and marauders should be carrying a few torches with them as well.

Beast dungeon would surely not be populeted if there was pitch black 24/7, so holes in the "roof" of the′dungeon should be enough for any adventurer to navigate away from there, but they should not see things and enemies without torches/spells, unless the enemy is under a strem of light.

You could still just wait a bit for magicka to regenerate, or hope that your few fireballs illuminated a container which has a torch in it.

You obviously never tried the Atronach birthsign? Stunted Magicka means your magicka does not regenerate on it's own.
Answer: If you run out of torches, Magicka, Restore Magicka potions and you have Stunted Magicka... you pray that you have a savegame from before entering the dungeon. If you knew you could end up in that situation in the first place and paid no heed to Murphy's law, it's your own fault :mage:

I could agree to a certain point with the whole dark dungeon thing, but it should not be the majority of them.
What i mean is that maybe 20% of the dungeons are really dark, and 80% have more lighting. This should be in direct relation to if the dungeon is inhabited or not.
My logic stop functioning when people choose to settle in a dungeon/cave, in pitch black... There should be torches and fires burning to have some light. Casitng creepy shadows when a scary creature is sneaking around.

The artwork that is the world will also feel more alive and awesome with good light setting...

When it comes to pitch black super dark nights outside: What can i say... it is a stupid idea! It is never pitch black outside, not even in the middle of the night in the northern parts of norway in the middle of the winter... You know, when the sun is not over the horizon at all during the day...
There is always some sort of light, and the eye will adjust to dark environments so that we are able to see even when its dark.

I think the nights in skyrim should be epic beautiful... Stars in the sky and aurora borealis (northern lights) on the cold days. Please BGS, make it beautiful and atmospheric, not a 300 hour pitch black dungeon crawl for the hardcoe geeks. 1/2 of the game takes place during the night...

The only problem I had with dark dungeons and the requirement to use nighteye or a torch was that the darkness never seemed to affect enemies. So I have no problem with dungeons being dark(er), but (mainly humanoid) npc's should also be affected and not just bee-line to me as if it was bright as day for them.

True. But how could one implement that so it's noticeable to you? I mean, if they know you're there, they'll see your silhouette and know where to swing. The only things this could affect are timings - they won't know when you're blocking or swinging in the dark, so you get more leeway in your own timings. But is that really something you'd notice?

Good point. I could see darkness aiding stealthy characters. The NPCs could also be unaware where to attack, or they could flee. The problem with the former is that it may look like a bug ingame.

Nighteye was more irritating than helpful. Everything was blue as [censored] and you couldn't see the shadows to hide in.

This is right....when i played assassin characters, one of the first things i did was get a nighteye spell.
It seemed alot darker on 360,so light, nighteye spells, and torches were needed.
i have the 360 version and i actually used the night eye ring mostly under water, the caves dungeons, some ayleid ruins and too see smaller items in Oblivion.

i think the darkness level of Skyrim should be the same as the Xbox360 version of Oblivion.

Actually,I enjoy little details in ruins and because of that I always had torches with me.Oblivion was pretty much perfect in this matter I think.Sure,it would be pitch black in reality, but I don't like the combination of dark places and first person.

Night eye was better in Morrowind,Oblivion's was more like night vision for it had a filter.I don't like watching the game with blue or green glasses...

Definitely agree. I always have the darker nights and darker dungeon mods for Oblivion, because it really adds a lot of realism to the game.

I have mixed feelings about it. I'm running a dark nights mod on FO:NV and the night is so dark that it's nearly impossible to operate. It certainly makes things more difficult, and it's obviously more realistic.

I tend to like it, but i can see where many players would not like it.

I seldom needed a light source (I usually used Starlight when I did) because I always had my brightness turned up really high. :P

I believe that there should be different levels of darkness depending on where the location is. In Oblivion, I played the game with the lighting turned down because, not only did it increase my need for torches but also improved the graphics quite a bit; however, I got tired of my basemant being the same level of darkness as an underground dungeon. I think there should be a certain level of light that leaks in depending on what the structure is made of (a wooden house having light leak in through small holes in the wood. Another thing I want is open caves. Every cave seemed like it was at least once used by humans because they all had doors. An unknown cave out in the wild shouldn't have doors in it. Maybe if they could make the caves similar to Minecraft's...
I do like the idea of flammable objects/surroundings, they had something similar in Farcry 2. This would also add to a dragon attacking a village... In fact, most of the ideas listed in this thread sound good ^_^. We would need the ability to roll if we could catch fire in the way mentioned.
