Remember that there is a difference between Nerevar and the Nerevarine. I believe aceisking was referring to the former.

Nerevar's background is kinda' vague. All I know is that he had humble beginnings as a chimer warrior/hunter. Of course, that comes from the sermons, and everyone knows how full of crap those things are, so take that with a grain of salt.

His family is unknown as yet. Al lwe know is that he was, with help from his ring, both powerful and charismatic enough to unite the Chimer people, something that had never been done before and rarely done since. So I guess he and his family are not important, but he the symbol, and his accomplishments are very important to the pople of Morrowind.

I think I'll go with that one......

That era has more versions than Daggerfall has endings, and we like it that way. You could write a distinct epic on each interpretation of history.

Does the charicter's background REALLY have to be uncertain? it leaves one of those messy blanks you have to fill yourself, and IMO Personally developed canon is not official canon.

its not cannon at all. thats the whole point: you can be anyone you want to be.

Part of it is how it raises problems when integrating some charicters from a previous game into a current game. for example, they only vaguely refer to the neverar. Perhaps there will Be something in TES5 where it looks for save files from oblivion and will adjust the dialog according to your oblivion charicter's race and gender?

Yes, it has to be uncertain because you need the freedom to act who you are. The uncertainty isn't that strange though. It ads some good touches of realism and all that you have to give up is the desire to be certain of everything. Though if you wish, you could say that the identity of the Nerevarine being unknown is canon.

There is a nice excerpt in the Sermons about this. Vivec finally having become a Ruling King - like the Player, meets the Chancellor of Exactitude, the last argument to overcome before he can continue.
