Nerevarine's Expedition to Akavir

Post » Fri Jul 15, 2011 4:50 pm

So i was playing Oblivion, and i heard this Rumor where the Nerevarine went to the Akavir lands for some reason

This peeked my interest, and forced me to start googling it....i got very little answers as a result
and only speculation, maybe, maybe not. Blah blah blah.

So i'm wondering what you guys know on the matter, and if you DONT know, at least what your thoughts are on it.

It's just a Hand Wave by the developers to explain the Nerevarine's absence during the Oblivion crisis. After all, you'd think the man that had become champion of Morrowind would have managed to stop Ald'ruhn from being destroyed, and would have helped fight in the Oblivion Crisis. Add to this, the fact that fans have always had something of an obsession with Akavir, and it's a rather good way for the developers to get rid of the Nerevarine.

I considered it a rather lame handwave...you'd figure he'd have enough on his hands in Morrowind even without the Oblivion crisis.

Lame *and* half-assed. Honestly, it would have been better if they never mentioned her again. That way, one could assume that she was battling it in Morrowind, her ancestral home, and perhaps died there. But no, Bethesda had to send her to Ak avir, which makes not even a little bit of sense, even if one assumes she did not like Morrowind all that much.

If you look back it's really hard to get rid of the past heroes.....esspecially when the entire series so far as taken place in a 40 year timeline.

You can do it like Arena did, The enternal Champion is never spoken of again.....despite him easily being the most powerful champion ever. But this leaves massive gaps in the story....where is this almightly champion during the oblivion crisis? he is the Emporer's most trusted guard, why isnt he helping? (My bet is that he is in fact Jauffre)

You can do it like Daggerfall, where the champion is utterly destroyed by the ending.

Or you can do it like Morrowind where the hero continues on thier travels to conquer more dangerous places. Which I feel is the best way to do it as it removes any doubt for why they arent there for the next crisis, and it essentially allows thme to be written out without killing them off.

Whatever way you do it people will complain, but I like the way they got rid of the Nerevarine.

I kind of like it as an explanation for where the Nerevarine went. I'd have been more upset if he died during the crisis or simply disappeared like Vivec (either to Daedra or escaping to Aetherius.)

By the time you've gotten to the end of both expansions, the Nerevarine is a quasi-immortal (unaffected by age or disease) god killer (Dagoth Ur, Almalexia, Hiricine...quite the hit list.) It probably sounded like a good time to go battle snake men, tiger dragons and snow demons.

I like it. Knowing the Nerevarine, had he stayed behind and fought in the Oblivion crisis, the Champion of Cyrodil would have been made obsolete as the Nerevarine jumped in to save the day again.

The Champion of Cyrodiil is the Champion of Cyrodiil and not the Champion of Morrowind and the Nerevarine would have had little incentive to waltz over to Cyrodiil. He would have even less reason to go to Akavir - he has a task at hand, the rejuvenation of the Dunmer culture, and he would have had his work cut out for him either way bringing the great houses and the ashlanders truly together - at the end of the game, the only point they all agree on is that they support him, but that's about it. And after what happened in Tribunal, he would have little to no reason to believe that King Helseth would be any support in issues that have a grander importance and go beyond securing his (Helseth's) immediate power. Heck, that twit of a king would have had no qualms to present victory to Dagoth Ur on a silver plate by having the Nerevarine offed by the Dark Brotherhood.

"Heal my people and restore Morrowind" - I don't think Azura would consider a side trip to Akavir an essential part of that task.

The most important thing about this is that the Nerevarine leaving for Akavir is just a rumor.Anything could have happened to her and it is the player's choice to decide what actually happened.Maybe she indeed went to Akavir, maybe she didn't want to go there but it happened, maybe she 's somewhere else and this rumor spread.
Just another detail that I remember a moment ago - the Nerevarine also took Kagrenac's tools with her when she left.Check out some obscure text at The Imperial Library for that.
Akavir is a nice setting for fanfiction, though not everyone is interested in it, let alone write some.
Yes, the Nerevarine wouldn't have any reason to go to Akavir but you can always pretend something important triggered the trip - like a secret Blades national security mission which goes wrong, ending with the Nerevarine surrounded by snakemen somewhere near an Akaviri swamp :D It's not that our hero wanted to end up like that...no matter how much (s)he disliked those xenophobic Dunmer.
