One of us will eventually remember to make a thread about the nerevarine and what real-world mythic and religious overtones the character uses. But sadly it's not this thread.
This one, then?
The Nerevarine has several religious overtones, mainly because the entire plot of Morrowind deals with the religious implications of stealing divinity at the cost of a betrayal. While there are several noticeable Christ-like aspects of the character, it is important to remember that no one claims or wants to claim that the Nerevarine, or Nerevar before him/her, is actually divine--indeed, the Nerevarine is the messenger (angel?) of Azura, who acts the part of true divinity in the game. Of course, considering that (as far as I know, though religion was never my best subject) Christ never claimed to be divine himself, perhaps this is more accurate than modern religion anyway? Nerevar=King David in my view, anyway.
Though that might make Vivec into King Herod... [shrug]
