Netflix Inquiry

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 3:59 am

I've been considering getting Netflix. I know they have a few shows they produce themselves that have caught my attention, Daredevil being the main one. I've longed for a good Daredevil presentation since Affleck's absurdity called a movie. Daredevil is one of my favorite comic book heroes :)

Anyway, I go to their https://www.netflix.com/ for info. The "So much to watch" clickie does nothing, so I have no clue what shows they have. The "Pick your price" clickie at least compares the 3 sub tiers they have. I'm sure their middle tier ($9.99/month) suits me well.

1) However, I have heard that some people have troubles with their cable companies concerning bandwidth. I have "unlimited" bandwidth through CableOne. But I have heard that some companies "may" put some brakes on speed with Netfilx type services. Has anyone run into this? Is it very common, or more of a "myth" that does not really happen, or very rarely?

2) Also... Commercials. How heavy are they on Netflix? I have this harwired aversion to to paying for television service AND watching ads, thus my refusal to get TV through cable or satellite. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and the like have commercials, but they are about shows on their own networks, which I do not mind. It is the gamut of "Buy this product" commercials that get under my skin if I am paying for service.

What are folks' experience with Netflix?

I cant really speak for the US netflix, since I have my subsciption in Germany but I would be surprised if its different:

I can not recall ever seeing a commercial/ad on Netflix, apart from maybe a trailer for one of the netflix movies starting on the mainpage, which I dont really see as an ad.

Don't know if its planned tho.

In my experience-

1) I have Cox cable (which is waaayyy overpriced, but about all that's available here) and have no bandwidth issues. I don't believe that any ISP should be able to limit or interfere with certain sites or type of sites.

2) About the only commercials that I see on Netflix are the ones when they try to get you to watch some of their original programs, which is just a visual preview along with the 'Watch Trailer' option, that may auto-play unless you unselect it.

:dead:

edit: one downside- be prepared to be disappointed from time to time when you think "oh, I'm sure that they have this movie/tv series", but they don't. There's tons to watch on Netflix, but not always what you're looking for.

Netflix works fine for me, although I only subscribe for a single screen as my broadband is very slow.

The only adverts I get are via email http://imageshack.com/a/img903/1558/YEhSNf.jpg - no I have never seen The Vampire Diaries, is it any good? plus you can unsubscribe from the email ads.

1. I don't think I've ever had that problem.

2. Have never been forced to watch an ad. Some shows offer previews (trailers), but that's it.

Netflix is awesome. Daredevil is badass. You should also watch the newly released Jessica Jones, its also good.

Netflix is great for TV shows, and a little less great for movies (currently...this changes depending on the kinds of deals Netflix can make with content owners). I think the service is worth the asking price. There are no ads at all outside of an occasional viewing suggestion. I have a grandfathered plan wherein I get 3 screens of streaming and 1-at-a-time disc rental. You can get just about anything on DVD or Blu-Ray from them, which supplements the streaming catalog nicely.

Bandwidth throttling can be an issue with some ISPs...which is why we really need some long-standing net neutrality laws in the U.S., but I won't say anything more about that because it will inevitably end up falling under "politics." I don't have trouble with that with my current Comcast service, but legislation with that stuff has been ebb and flow.

Daredevil is pretty good, by the way. I didn't love it as much as some did, but I enjoyed it. Definitely much better than the cheesy interpretations coming out of Hollywood.

Thank you, Softnerd! That was what I was thinking of!

Thanks everyone for the replies. A lot of helpful info shared. I chose the middle package as it is has HD shows. I only have one TV so no need for multiple viewing options. And Ultra-HD has not visited my home yet.

DVD rentals. Something else to look into through them :)
