Neutral Karma and Rep

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 12:49 am

In FO3, you only got the option to do the good thing or the bad thing. The only 'Neutral' option was to not do the quest and get no XP and give up your rewards. Let's take the FO3 quest where you have to let Gob and his buddies in Tenpenny tower for an example. You could either kill them and receive bad Karma, let them in so they can kill everyone and receive bad Karma, or convince Tenpenny to let 'em in and receive good Karma. Now, couldn't you have just have made Gob pay you so you can convince Tenpenny? That would be pretty Neutral in my opinion. Now there was a few quests where you could actually do something Neutral, like in the quest Those!, you could let Bryan Wilks stay in Grayditch, neither enslaving him nor sending him to Rivet City.

Now, doing the Neutral thing will still get you Reputation with the respective town, as they don't care how you did it, as long as you did there quest. So, Neutral Rep could also be a problem. Any thoughts?

I don't see it being a problem. The game will have alot more dialogue that will give you neutral options. Also the rep will effect how people in the location will see you. So you can balance things out by doing bad things. In the other Fallouts Rep is not a permanent thing. The Town could love you for doing a very importaint quest for them but then hate you for doing something really bad.

To maintain neutral in Fallout 3 you had to steal a bunch of stuff and give water to beggars and keep doing it. It really wasn't worth it.

wait...Gob? dont you mean Roy Phillips?

also, i notice in dialog that the character usually gets a good, neutral, or evil dialog choice, i wish that this wasnt the case, as some are just too left, right, or grey, i wish they added dialgoue choices for the player to use, because i know i wouldnt say 10% of the stuff that was shown to be the neutral choice.

Neutral/Unknown is not a reputation you can maintain in F:NV unless you avoid doing contentious things. There are actually two separate reputation axes for each group/area: Fame and Infamy. If you do things that help the group, you get Fame. If you harm the group, you get Infamy. The relationship of these two scores determines your overall reputation. So if you do a bunch of good and bad things, you aren't unknown; you have a mixed reputation.

This was done specifically to avoid the feeling that your actions "wash out".

So is there going to be a menu in the pip boy that shows your overall rep and rep with every single faction? Seems a bit much doesn't it? So every single faction/settlement will have a separate rep meter? Wow that's gonna be one long menu to sift through...

Spam moar..

On topic question: Will factions take any account of your karma? I know rep is more important, but say your a really good guy (karma wise) and your with CL. Do they complain? And, extending that further, will they comment on your nuetrality, be it karma or rep?

I think Karma is just a personal stat that has no effect on anything.

That was close to what I'm thinking, but it has to have some sort of ramifications.

Not at all. I end up at Nuetral for a bit, but end up evil towards the end. I end up killing the idiots who bug me, and that's usually alot of them.

It svcks in games with black and white morality and a morality meter of some kind. It's interesting in a game like Dragon Age.

It has it's opportunities, and it doesn't push you in any certain moral direction - a bit of both good and evil, a life at the edge of the knife. If something like that is taken into account in the game, that is.

That is, indeed, true, and this seems to happen in some other RPGs which feature such a system as well. I think a lot of games just assume that you'll want to be either good, or evil, and treat neutral as just a starting point for when you have not yet done enough to go either way. To maintain neutral karma, you often need to randomly alternate between good and evil acts, thus, a neutral character seems not so much like someone who has not taken one moral standpoint or another as someone who has some sort of mental disorder. Not to mention that where as such games often give specific perks to good or evil characters, neutral characters often get the short end of the stick, so to speak.

Hopefully New Vegas will feature more options for a neutral character, my characters might not end up being neutral anyway, but having more room to act like such a person would be nice, if I want to play a neutral character, I want to be able to act that way.

To me being Neutral is acting in one's best intrest without Gratiously doing harm or good.I dont think it means you do nothing i dont think it should mean you do nothing atall.
