I never knew that Deacon...[SPOILER]

Post » Sat Jan 16, 2016 11:00 am

...was a Synth and created the Railroad. :o

The entire time I have been active in the forums here, everyone has been talking about Danse being a Synth and Curie being capable of getting a Synth body, but haven't said a word about Deacon's identity. I only found this out over the weekend when, on my new character, I decided to bring Deacon with me on RR quests so I could get his affinity up (before I eventually betray them to get the BoS ending). But what is interesting is that, once he reveals to you his identity...it's almost casually, nonchalant, not at all like Danse where it's a shock to everyone, including Danse himself. I suppose it does make sense that the founder of the RR is, himself, a Synth...but it does bring up questions regarding free-will, etc., in Gen-3s.

Fallout 4 certainly is channeling the spirit/ideas of "Bladerunner"/"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", with the Institute, Synth paranoia/fear, and Synths popping up left-and-right within your group of companions. Nick, Deacon, Danse, and Curie all bring a very different insight into what it means to be a Synth in the Commonwealth wasteland.

I got some ocean front property in Arizona as well, LOL. Keep playing with Deacon until you get his perk.

Oh, Deacon.

He also once battled a building sized supermutant and defeated it with only a pen knife.

He's responsible for the creation of Project Purity.

He alone harvests all the crops in every settlement at once.

He's the president of the Magnolia fan club (and it's most active member).

He hijacked the molecular relay to save all the citizens of University Point just as they were getting shot, making the synths think they vaporized them. They now live undercover as the Atom Cats.

Yeah Deacon is the self confessed liar in chief, which makes it amusing when his claims are used by pro-Synth people as facts.

Deacon is a huge bollox.

Even his max relationship speech is full of lies and he will admit it if you choose the correct reply.

Honestly this is what makes me question why he seems to be so popular with people.

How can you know if anything he says or does is genuine? From what I've read, even his final affinity story is suspect. I get that he's suave and wise-cracking, but if he's a compulsive liar then you have no idea who you're traveling with. Everything about him could be made-up. He's just a complete fabrication.

I guess I don't get why people like him. Seems like a piece of [censored] to me.

Yea, I can't tell you how many times I put a few bullets in him when we started out together, damn shifting appearance. (OW OW OW OW)

I almost whipped out his recall code when he lied to me about starting the institute...

LOL so I had him equip a full set of Combat armor, now every time i look at him he is either clothed or naked and that can change very rapidly. I guess some of his outfits can not be worn with armor so rather then just use the ones he can wear with armor he goes naked. A real tool! By the way has anyone tried using the recall code on him? I mean is he even really a synth?

Pretty sure there is no recall code, it's just a message not to trust anyone.

Well, at least Deacon says some hilarious things as a companion, especially after combat. "We live to fight another day. And night. And day. And so on..."

Deacon once seduced the master and became the Master's lover. Then he destroyed a alien spacecraft with his bear hands and became immortal.

He hands you his shutdown code on a peace of paper and it says "you shouldn't believe everything you hear" you can also call him out on his lie that he is a Synth with a speech check.

If you believe that lie, he also has a bridge in New York he wants to sell you heh

I finally stuck him power armor to stop him constantly changing clothes (and then he removed all the armor from the frame).......first time he changes behind your back its a "What the hell" moment, but he does it constantly, while your looking at him and during firefights, seriously you couldn't wait to change until after the Minigun wielding Super Mutant is killed.

I think Deacon's charm comes from the way he carries himself now. His comments are all nice and moderate, he has an innate sense of right and wrong, and he tends to not be too annoying when you do things which other companions may dislike. The fact that he keeps lying is a message from him to not trust people, and at the end if he wants to keep his life story personal and not share it, I don't really see a problem. Although I believe that last story about his Synth girlfriend was probably true. The point is, it really doesn't matter. What matters is where we go from here, and he is a more than decent person I'd like to have watch my back.

Three interesting quotes from him is, "You are good at this, too good", "before I met you I could go days without massacring everything" finaly "you are thorough I admit that" not sure if last is clearing the area or looting the bodies.

The changing outfits are fun but can be a bit confusing, first time in diamond city I could not find him and needed som stuff from him to trade :)

Or I mistake him for an settler then managing settlements.

He was lying about that lol

Deacon is not a synth, and he did not create the Railroad. A central part of his character is that he's a compulsive liar. During his 'personal talks' at the affinity checkpoints, he'll lie to you basically every time. Calling him out on his lies is an option, and he'll admit that he's lying.

All that being said, I really like Deacon. My character is a more stealth oriented sniper build, and Deacon is great for this. He seems to do stealth better than the other companions do. His perk is obviously oriented toward this. I like how he changes outfits according to where you're at. If you bring him to Vault 81 he'll be wearing a Vault 81 Suit. Note that if you equip him with clothing or armor, he won't change it.

An astute observer might see Deacon around before ever even meeting him. When you first meet him he talks about how he was following you, and this is in the game. He can be seen posing as a Diamond City guard when you first arrive there, he can be seen in Goodneighbor, and from what I've been told he can even be seen in your settlements posing as a settler.

Here he is when I first arrived in Diamond City on my current play through. It doesn't show him as 'Deacon' and he doesn't have any dialog aside from the more generic DC Guard dialog, but it's definitely him.

His final affinity talk is the one where he is, most likely, telling the truth. The Survivor still has the option of simply not believing him, and it's the only story he tells where, if not believed, he basically just shrugs and says 'yeah, good talk' and that's the end of it. No matter which way it ends, his normal cheerfulness and and positive attitude is gone by the end of the conversation.

His default companion dialog remains the same as it was, though.
