It's still in my opinion, the best game on this Earth. I would definitely recommend it, but it takes a very peculiar kind of gamer to come to the same conclusion I do. And I don't mean that as a backhanded "I'm better than this type of person" insult or anything.
So what exactly does Morrowind offer that I feel no other game does? A true "Second World" feel, and with that, an actual sense of exploration, excitement and consequence. They sell the life of the Island of Vvardenfell in the small details. Some things in the game simply exist for the sake of reinforcing this. You can see how the people of Vvardenfell live their lives, the unique foods, their exports, and the Empire's role in their lives as conquerors. Simply existing in this world is a thrill I've not found truly as powerful in any other gaming experience (Fallout 3 and New Vegas come quite close though).
Morrowind does a lot of things wrong though, which is why it's such a divided game. The actual core gameplay seems to exist only as a vessel of necessity. Magic, Stealth and Combat are all equally uninteresting as an action, though the traditional RPG "Die Roll" Mechanics of their function will definitely appeal to Power RPGers and true Roleplayers deeply. Unlike in Oblivion, you can use the games mechanics against itself, and buff certain attributes to instantly crush even the strongest opposition. Additional, Balance is an afterthought, Medium armor is a "Bridge" to be used as a sub-skill at best, as it lacks any end-game quality armors outside of mods and some expansions, and many of the weapon types don't behave in any meaningfully unique manner.
The Games' age has also presented a new (Albeit, rectifiable problem with a little patience) of looking pretty terrible. Artistically, the game has moments of breathtaking beauty, but this game comes from a time when Graphics did limit the art, so a lot of the games' conceptualized glory is lost in goofy animations and nigh-unrecognizable meshes. MGE turns the environment into next-gen amazing, and services a lot of the meshes into something that looks like it is actually alive.
And then there's the cliff racers. This is a problem that cannot be described, it has to be experienced.
