The 5970 is dual 5870s. one 5870 is one gig of Vram. everything on a 5970 is twice a 5870. There are some exceptions like non reference 5870s with 2gb and some 5970s with 4gb.

a 5970 will have 2gb. i would get 2 6950 2gb version. it will be cheaper and you get double the memory.

a 5970 is also xfire because its 2 gpus on one board. The performance gain from the 5970 to dual 6950s would be roughly 25% more.

The Radeon 6950 and higher come with 2GB stock, unless you specifically get a non-reference 1GB model.

One stock 6950 will run Crysis 2 full boar ultra DX11 high res 1080P and put out stable playable framerates averaging around 40FPS. With dips to about 30 in some areas. However they are not noticeable without your FPS being displayed. The overall rates are pretty darn stable.

Yes, I tested this, I own an XFX 6950 that I flashed to a 6970, I own two of them in fact. I switched the dual-BIOS back to the factory 6950 to see how it would hold up, and it does darn good on it's own.

You can get one for about $275. Most all reference 2GB models are easily flashed to a 6970, though I only recommend it on dual-BIOS models so there is no chance at all of bricking your card.

Crossfire two 6950's and you got some serious power there, more if you flash them to 6970's. That would only run you about $560.

A single 6990 is over $700 and your 6950's in Crossfire will perform on par with the 6990, again, more so if you flash them to 6970's, and cost you a lot less.

When I have time over this next weekend, I will pop in the other 6950 I have and get numbers.
