New character given quests inappropriate for his level

Post » Fri Jan 15, 2016 11:33 pm

I made a new character recently (who may be a heavy Power Armor user and will side with BoS for the end-game) and I get the feeling that I've been given quests that are not appropriate for his level. Here are examples:

1) Completed MM Tenpines, Abernathy Farm, and Sunshine Coop quests without issue, all of which are stationed in the NW area of the map. Afterwards, Preston wants to send me to County Crossing and Nordhagen Beach...

2) Started BoS quests, and while the first Cleansing The Commonwealth quest was right next to Cambridge Police Station, the first Quartermastery quest was placed at Monsignor Plaza...which is in an area that seems more out of the way from Cambridge and has many enemies inside. Maybe I am wrong about this, but it feels like it's in a location that is not appropriate for level 9, the level at which I had been given the quest (I am now level 14).

3) Also on the topic of BoS quests, and tying in, indirectly, to point #1, I started The Lost Patrol and had no issues until I came to the Revere Satellite Array, which is infested with Super Mutants who weren't dying too quickly and was headed by a Legendary Super Mutant with a skull by his name. So...probably a level 20 location, as I hear that most areas are scaled at 10-level increments (please correct me if I am wrong!). How this relates to point #1? County Crossing's Raider problems wants me to go to Revere beach, so therefore close to the Satellite Array, and Nordhagen is even further east than those locations.

Are any of these quests/locations inappropriate for my current level of 14, or am I just going crazy? And if it is inappropriate, what is the appropriate level for tackling those places? I may end up jumping into Unlikely Valentine, since I don't remember that quest being difficult, or doing some exploring, Settlement building, etc. in the "safe zone" until I get to the right level to complete the above-mentioned quests.

According to the Prima Guide, yeah, those locations are going to be tough for a level 14 character. Revere and Nordhagen are given "threat levels 35+". Monsignor Plaza is 6-14 though so you should be good to go there.

Personally, I avoided areas until I was within ten levels of the enemies there. Any further than that and it just got frustrating. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the information! I really thought it odd that I was being given locations for quests that seemed to be in areas too high for me, given what level I was when the quest was given. The game really should try to give quests that are appropriate for your character's current level at the time, have certain locations "blocked off" as a random quest location until you get into that level range.

I just hope that I don't have to put finishing The Lost Patrol off for too long, as I am mostly focusing on BoS with this toon. I don't remember being level 35+ when I did that quest on my other character, Super Mutants and all. Then again, I am somehow finding more Legendaries on my current, lower-level character even though both games are on Normal difficulty.

Preston sent me to a farm at level 12 that wanted me to clear out Saugus Ironworks. That place totally kicked my tail. No matter how hard I tried there was no way I was going to make it in here. So I've got that quest just hanging now and I'll go back after I'm level 25+ or something. Honestly I knew there was a problem when none of my sniper sneak attacks were killing anybody.

That satellite station with the super mutants is a pain also. Took me forever to clear that when I was level 16.

Ouch, that would be painful. Once watched my brother go to Saugus Ironworks on Shareplay (PS4) and parts of it seemed pretty intense if you aren't the right level.

I might try the Satellite Relay again once I hit level 20, since it's almost at the end of that quest. Hopefully by then I will have more defense and damage.

You could also nerf difficulty just for thiese quests, the difference is staggering.

Just for kicks, I nerfed it right down to Easy at the start of ny current playthru: I made it all the way to the Atom Cat's Garage at LEVEL EIGHT.

I initially explored the map without doing quests, raising my XP as i went, looting armour and guns until i was well kitted out.

My tactics initially with places like the satellite array was to draw opponents out, putting landmines in their path and try and tackle them individually.

It was a slow process of attrition.

With different characters, I've been to all of those locations before reaching level 15. It never occurred to me to wonder if they were too high a level quests for me... Honestly, of all the places mentioned here though, Saugus Ironworks gave me the most trouble, and especially the boss fight.I've found that PA helps with that one though.

With County Crossing and Nordhagen beach, the difficulty really depends on which quests the settlers there send you on. It won't always be the same place or the same enemy, and some are easy, others are definitely a challenge.

If you kept the save file(s) from your previous character, this is what's causing the mission assignments to higher areas. The game randomizes missions, and adjusts those to the player's save file level, not the character's current level.

I confirmed this by removing my previous save files, and I'm no longer being sent south of Diamond City with my level 22 character. Once I restored the save files, damned if the very next settlement save was Somerville Place, where no way can I take out the Mirelurk Queen which lives nearby. At least, not without a ton of stimpaks and a few fatman shots (which I don't carry on me).

Often the quests themselves aren't that hard, but there's a lot of nasty real estate between you and where the quest is.

Well, of course that's true, but on the other hand I would have to assume that if I went and completed those quests, I also traveled to those sites, eh? From my own experience, running is a viable option when encountering things you don't think you can handle... and I often at lower levels lead pursuers into conflicts with other things I also don't want to fight. Then too, I take the aqua boy/girl perk very early, so I can dive into water if I need to.

I think the difference is that when I was sent on these quests at early levels I presumed everybody was being sent on these same quests at the same levels, eh? Not knowing the difference, I always had to find my way through the obstacles and I thought it was just part of the game.

Places like the Revere Sat array sub level 20 feel like the proper difficulty the game should have throughout, a shame it just gets easier as you level up.

Guess I will wait until I am level 20 on my current toon to tackle that location. As long as I get The Lost Patrol done before I complete Reunions.

My current character is lvl 10 and I just completed a quest in which I had to take out raiders at Dunwich Borers. I've been there many times with other characters so I pretty much knew what I was up against. I usually don't use PA, but I had to make an exception considering I was going up against Raider Veterans.

Some of the quests are ridiculously hard. I got a research patrol quest from Proctor Quinlan for Gunners Plaza. Research Patrol... Gunners Plaza... ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? This should have been a full Brotherhood assault! I'm supposed to protect this clown from dying when he charges the Gunner who is equipped with a fatman???

*Sigh* Anyway, after having him die 5 times I was finally able to complete it. Definitely my toughest quest.

Don't forget you don't always have to use the front door.

Yeah, after him dying three times in the front I looked for an alternate entrance.
