New Coverage

Ooh, this is exciting. I've quite liked OXM's handling of previous Skyrim articles.

And while I tend towards optimism anyway, I find it hard to take anything negative away from Bruce's comments on Radiant Story. Firstly, it's somewhat humble of Bethesda to mention it at all; and secondly they wouldn't be talking of that aspect of Skyrim's development, retrospectively, if they hadn't already corrected it to their satisfaction. One of the many benefits of a long development cycle, and evidence of Beth learning not only from past mistakes, but checking themselves as they go in current development.

Can't wait to see the full interview (and whatever [new?] media accompanies it).

hey no problem =)
just keep an eye out on my channel, doubt I'll make a thread, anyway feel free to though

Thanks man. I'll subscribe to you in a second.

But you're not supposed to admit to them. In Oblivion's development, never once did they say that Radiant AI was flawed or level scaling was a mistake.

And look what happened at release.

In addition, if you can recognize a flaw with Radiant Story, I don't think you'd admit it if you planned to fix it. If there's a flaw in development, they call it a development bug and fix it. There's no need to tell the public what problems you're having unless you're preparing them to face it themselves. Why risk the bad press?

It sounded like he was speaking of something that happened early on, and not something that was recent or is still ongoing.

None of the things you listed have any relation to Radiant Story.

Yes they do.

In Oblivion, a cave was a cave. When you visted it, it had the same bad guys, the same challanges, and you recognised it as being "the cave thats good for sneaky characters" or whatever. with radiant story, it's contents is tailored to your skills and it becomes "that cave that, like others, will contain the things that my character would like to fight no matter what the case". That is one feature of Radiant story. Also, radiant story would mean no more distinct NPC characters, and more generic npc's filling the boots of eachother.

IFFFFF bethesda were idiots, that would be the case.

But they're not. They are trying things, fixing their mistakes and improving- I've no doubt that radiant story will serve as a sutble quest tweaker, a brilliant side quest generator, and a good plot hole filler, and by the sounds of it create some pretty funny scenes. (guys fighting over sword). Just so long as they fix their mistakes.

you know, this might just be the first time i've ever heard anybody actually say "Cyrodiil". i don't even think Todd said it during Oblivion's hype stage.

This time around I hope Radiant AI is in the game. Unlike it's predecessor.

It was radiant, just not as radiant as they intended it to be.

it sort of is. it's pretty much Oblivion but more polished, and people go to work. you're not going to get dudes walking around killing each other over meat because that's STUPID and i don't know WHY ANYBODY WANTS IT but disposition plays a role now and the only thing that never happened in-game that happened in the E3 demo (that is, the lady inviting you inside because she liked you) will kind of sort of happen in Skyrim so hey.

It sounds a bit like they may be back tracking and saying they may not be able to implement the radiant AI like they had already promised, I hope that aint the case.

It's not. With any new tech it takes time to fully harness it. I wouldn't worry about it.

Bethesda doesn't give a [censored] about bad press. if they did then Todd never would have mentioned their inability to do ladders as well as they'd like, because you see how much Bethesda's detractors have taken that out of context and gone HURR BETHESDA svckS.

they're honest about what they can do, and that's incredibly refreshing, especially considering the industry's trend of smothering every inch of their marketing with as much post-processing as they smother their games with, both intended to make the bits that are really ugly look less obvious.

like others have said, this is very likely intended to make people feel more comfortable about the idea of Radiant Story, with them saying straight out that it's not being overused and that there's still a majority of hand-placed content within the world. a lot of people have freaked out over the idea of RANDOM QUESTS and part of it was sort of grounded in logic but most of it was just I HATE CHANGE.

This!

This is interesting, I just saw a copy of OXM at Barnes and Noble about 15 mins ago, which mentioned Skyrim. I didn't pick it up and it came in cellophane, so I was curious.

I'll put it up, I did it with this one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6Xn0GbweAE

The way Todd describes the new dialogue system in that video sounds really cool but it also sounds like it can lead to glitchy/broken quests. When you "activate" an npc a list of dialogue option will pop out and scroll to the side of the screen. You can continue to walk anywhere and even engage with other npc's. That just sounds like it's asking for dialogue to get cut off at the wrong time and/or quests not activating when they should.

there's like a 99.8% chance that they've already realized that and covered it. you probably can't just WALK AWAY from stuff that's really important, and for the stuff you can you'll probably be able to go back and be like "hey can you repeat that i was a dike and walked away on you but i still want you to pay me".

Yea hopefully because the new system sounds really cool. In Two Worlds 2 you can move around while in a conversation but if you walk to far it forces you back towards the npc.
